Beards in business

I retired from the Reserves last year after several decades so naturally I grew a beard. It came in with lots of gray that contrasted with my shiny head so I cancelled that experiment. I’ve had the trimmed mustache for decades, it’s a keeper.
Probably more beards and mustaches per capita in Alaska than most places, so beards are definitely not out of place.

There are plenty of acceptable beards in business settings. I think it all depends on the position you hold to the level of trim you rock.

i had a beard for awhile when my first batch of kids was small. one day i decided to shave it off.
my little girl came to bathroom door as i finished, her jaw dropped she ran screaming and crying and wouldn’t come near me for awhile.

1.) Are you a beardy or a smoothskin?
Smoothskin

2.) Is your beardedness (or lack thereof) by choice or due to some medical or genetic restriction?
By choice. It is in harmony with my life outside of window cleaning. Only time I start a beard is if I won’t be going anywhere for several days where I personally feel it matters.

3.) Did you wear a beard before you were self-employed?
No
4.) Do you believe that your beardedness (a)Enhances; (b)Impairs; or ©Has no effect on your professional image and interactions.
If I had a beard or allowed it for employees, it would have to be full enough and very well groomed. No in-between stuff.
5.) Would you ever shave your beard to appease a client or business associate?
If I had one, not actually sure to be honest. It would really have to be ‘worth it’ and not create hypocrisy if so.
6.) Please share anything else you think is relevant to the discussion. (pictures, random opinions, etc.)
I have no problem with a neat, conservative bearded look in general. It’s simply not the image I’m putting forward in my business atm.

6.) After 8 years in Army, the first thing i did was grow a beard. Now a days i keep it shorter.
As a Sales guru… i will say that a beard “shouldn’t” affect your ability to get the sell. That is, if you’re a good salesman then having a beard won’t lose you the sale. However, having an unkept appearance will. Gen X makes up most of the consumers now a days and Gen X isn’t as judgmental compared to the baby boomers when it comes to appearance for business.

Sounds wise to me because they size you up in less than 60 seconds when you first meet them. Only one chance to make a first impression
