So there I was yesterday baking in the 105 heat, getting blown around by the wind and sucking in smoke. A big fire started yesterday morning just across the highway from where we were working. The solution was drying almost instantly on the glass and even blowing back up onto the clean section of glass while squeegeing. Horrible day to say the least. Then this jack azz stops and wants to see my drivers license. He works for the city and also wants to see my business license. I have a license where I live but apparently you need one in every city you do business in. That could add up to over $1,000. So he gives me the citation and I have to mail in the forms within 10 days. I just wanted to slap this guy with my 36" squeegee! He was a total punk. So after finally finishing the job we realize all the roads are closed leading home beacuse of the fire. 15 minute drive is now more than an hour.
I forget what the topic was about but it inspired me to look over the laws in CA for starting a business. When I saw you needed a license for every city/town I thought man now that’s a state that really wants to steal small businesses money. Luckly I live in a state that allows for a nice broad sweep. Register with the state and you are good to go in the entire state. I feel for you guys.
I think you should have a license to conduct any service, it’s another step that keeps us legit. Yeah, sucks you got a little fine, but ya live and learn.
Next time someone from the city approaches you, run…
It’s not for wielding a squeegee, it’s for permission to provide a service and make some money within a municipality. My mother needed a business license to attend craft fairs to sell dust collectors to folks…
Not every municipality in CA requires a business license/permit. Mine doesn’t. And, many only require a license if one grosses above a certain dollar amount.
The license violation was not that bad. It was that on top of ridiculous weather. Yeah California is the rip off state. But there are a lot of people with money to spend.
I live in the Houston, TX area. As far as I can find, I do not need a license in every city. Can anybody confirm if Texas requires a license for every city?
