Cheap RO/DI System

I was surfing around ebay today and found this little system. For the price I could get 2 and run them into a holding tank in my van at night and leave with a full 100 gal tank in the morning (they produce 110gpd). Two of these should produce over 90 gal in 10 hours. I’m just wondering how often the pre-filters and RO/DI would need to be replaced. $260 for a RO/DI system to get started on. I’m not forgeting that I’ll need a tank that I can feed into a backpack.

You get what you pay for…

Like the RO units sold for under-sink applications, you’d be better off with a commercial-grade system. Have you checked out the WCR pure water system? I’m sure Alex, Bill, and Chris can set you up with a unit that fits your needs.

One must also consider durability, sales support, spare parts availablility, and other factors.

BTW, 100 gallons @ 0.5GPM = 200 minutes = 3 hours 20 minutes of use.

Yeah, I was thinking the same sort of thing the more that I thought about it. Besides that my TDS readings are 494 here. That will have a huge impact on the durability.

I started out with a 100gpd RO and it does the job just fine.
My tip would be to set it up in the garden feeding into a tank so that it can run 24 hours a day if needed. A submersible pump and 1.5" transfer pipe will fill you van tank in 10 minutes easy, so you can top up at lunch time if you need to.
If you’re worried about waste water, then a 300gpd or a 450gpd system would be better. Each additional membrane reduces the waste if its plumbed correctly.

This one looks good (the 20" pre-filters are good if you’re a window cleaner as they last much longer) but you’d want to swap the final stage carbon filter for a de-ionising cartridge, or if you have a di tank already, use it as an extra pre-filter.
