Cleaning Window Sills

I have a question about cleaning sills while performing a residential window cleaning. I have a set base price that includes cleaning the window in and out, wiping the screen, and wiping the sill. I also have an additional charge that I offer that includes a more thorough screen and sill cleaning. My problem is that when a customer only wants the basic sill wipe down, I find that I end up doing the upgraded sill cleaning at no additional cost. This obviously takes extra time and lowers my profits. I take pride in my work and find it hard to leave it alone with just a quick wipe down. Does anyone else find themselves doing the same thing? If so what are some thoughts or ideas that I can do to stop this mindset, or what do you do in the same scenario. Thanks.

Humm, does somebody have a case of the ocd’s?

It might help not to open the window.

What I do is either not open the window or just use my chip brush to kick out most of the dirt unless they want to pay for the deep cleaning. Some windows you can just do a quick wipe, but if they have tracks in there, yeah, it’s gonna cost you.

I was having the same problem! I just started charging more and explaining the added value of my service. Most people appreciate it and accept my price. As for those who don’t, it gives me a little bit of wiggle room to lower my price, and then I just shudder over the dirtier sills as I move along.

Don’t give them the option and charge accordingly.
Or don’t open the windows and try not to let too much runoff make mud. :-/
I brush and do a quick pass with the handheld vacuum so not to have a lot of unpleasant looking muddy sills when the customer opens their clean windows. But each market is different. I include a decent clean of the sills with in/out clean. Have only had a couple of customers want the super duper clean which gets an extra charge.

My decision for quite awhile has been to only offer complete service. So my price includes screens and very good (not necessarily spotless) sill and track cleaning.
The reasoning is that they may be extremely dissatisfied when they open the windows and there is a potential mess that is unseen until then. I don’t want to risk the misunderstanding.

Any track cleaning is additional. I put it in my ads that track cleaning is additional. If my strip washer doesn’t get it in a pass or two it’s there to stay and I don’t open the window. Nobody wants to pay for track cleaning but everyone wants it for free. When people ask why track cleaning is additional I explain the entire process and everything that has to be done so they can see all the extra time it takes to clean the track. I also ask what their expectation of clean is. Usually I get back clean. Then I ask do you want a quick wipe or do u want it to look like new. No no just a quick wipe will do . So wou won’t mind all the dirt shoved in the corners and dirt on the inside or outside channel. Oh no I want all that cleaned but I don’t want to pay for a deep cleanout. I can clean inside out on a double hung window faster than it takes to clean a track. I wish someone made a really good battery operated steamer/ wet dry vac that would be awesome

I have the same thoughts on this subject, “only offer complete service.”

Here, here!

I only offer complete service.
Panes, screens, lower tracks and ledges.
It seems to me customers hire you for what you will do not for what you won’t do…

When I provide quote to client (in/out , vacuum sills and wipe them, cleaning screens and reinstall )
All that is included in my price . You can’t leave a dirty sill because first rain all dirt is going back on glass and screen!

Underpromise and over deliver!

Offer a sill wipe down, and then you can clean it to whatever ability that you want.

Thanks for all of the great replies. I am going to start with a higher price that includes the upgraded screen and sill cleaning. I will monitor the response and adjust from there. Thanks.

Humm, here’s a question: for those of you who offer the full monty, do you ever lower your price if someone doesn’t care about the tracks? In other words, do you compromise your service to get the sale at a lower price?

I don’t unless it’s going to be a deal breaker. I just say that we throw the sills and screens for free. If they don’t want the freebie, that’s fine with me

I at times offer three packages. One that is glass only so no expectation for anything else. It is also the cheapest. Second is a light cleaning of the tracks and then a heavy clean. I tell people that the glass and light cleaning is the most popular and the best value unless the tracks have been neglected. If people want really cheap then they go with just glass. If they are particular then they need to pay for the heavy cleaning. It gives them the control and option. A lot of people appreciate it and I think I book more jobs because of it.

When I explain to my clients why we do all of it . They just like the full package . That’s all
