Customer wants me ti fill out a W9?

Wrong again Michael, what I copied was from a letter my CPA sent out. Nothing from the IRS website.

And yes I have a problem with more and more govt. regulation added to the already heavy burden on small to medium sized business. When you get here, you’ll understand.

Professional Cleaning People out of Bohemia, NY is the only one I’ve had a pleasant experience with. I’ve done work for them a few times and they honor my prices (you MUST not settle for the original payout!) and promptly paid each time.

Thoreau Services is, in my experience, definitely one to be avoided. W-9s are lost, so they can’t pay you, emails are lost, they like to transfer you all over the company when you try to resolve a payment issue, etc.

There were a couple others I’ve had bad experiences with as well as 2 national construction companies (those that build/remodel retail chain stores such as Lane Bryant, Talbots, et al.) The construction companies did pay, but they’re very hard (for me, anyway) to get an agreement with on a fair price and then they each kept trying to get free add-ons or throw things in that “are just standard parts of post-construction cleaning - everybody knows that’s included.” I had to fight all the way up to the home office with one, explaining that my detailed, 5 page, proposal, which they agreed to, did not include those things and while “everybody” may not know it - the judge certainly will since it’s in writing and signed by both parties.

Maybe others have better luck with them, or maybe I just don’t have the personality to deal properly with them. I won’t get started ranting about these companies since no one (including me) wants to hear it. However, a large part of my advice to avoid them is also based on the experience of a great many friends in the industry who share my distaste and lack of respect for these companies.

Just my two cents.

most of my comm accts ask for one

it’s Obama’s fault.

Yes!!! Michael, you’re finally starting to get it!

Nothing is Obama’s fault, he’s still blaming Bush…

Who is probably still blaming Clinton…

It’s GW’s fault. George Washington, that is.

There should be a rule to not discuss politics here. Steve, everyone is entitled to their opinion buddy and just because people do not agree with you, does not mean they are wrong. And I am not even saying that you are wrong. Michael, I enjoyed reading all of your posts, very funny.

It’s king George’s fault

I agree with you, everyone has a right to their opinion and I respect that. I wasn’t disagreeing with Michael’s opinion but he had his facts wrong. Twice. I don’t think we should ban discussing politics at all though because government regulation can make or break you. I have a friend who lost $80,000 one year because of a simple change in government regulation. So I think the topic matters and what I said about the Obama administration changing the law regarding w-9’s was relevant because if small businesses hadn’t fought back last year you’d be filling one out and collecting taxes from EVERY vendor you have. Btw, it was part of the so called Obamacare law that was paased and because of the outcry that portion was amended. Any small business owner who buries his head in the sand and acts like politics doesn’t matter is in for a rude awakening.

This bill actually was a repeal of article 6041 of the Affordable Health Care Act that made a host of new requirements regarding disclosures made via 1099 forms. It reverted the reporting requirementsto what they were PRIOR to the healthcare act.

as said it is a very common practise so make sure to get a TIN or EIN # and you dont have to use your ss# check out the IRS web site for information.

You are correct. It started with this;

Amendment 16 - Status of Income Tax Clarified. Ratified 2/3/1913.
The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

Reporting requirements and forms to be submitted come and go, but paying taxes on income, from whatever source derived, has been with us almost 100 years now.
