Does anyone offer carpet cleaning? Can I pick your brain?

If you really want to work your a$$ off get into carpet cleaning.

Window cleaning is like sitting at home with a beer watching the game in comparison.

I researched carpet cleaning when I found info on the web about window cleaning. I chose windows not just for the cheaper initial investment but it seems that there are a ton of carpet cleaning companies around here. Last week I got the blue envelope, Valpak in the mail. I always check it out. There were 5 carpet cleaning companies and the prices seem so low for the work involved

It’s the same in my area, a ton of carpet cleaners advertising, but no window cleaners. The only people advertising window cleaning are the janitorial companies in the phone book. When I talk to a new customer I always ask if they have had their windows cleaned before, and if so by whom. A lot of times they haven’t had them cleaned in years because they didn’t know of anyone who cleaned windows. But if they have had someone clean them in the past year, it was invariably just “this guy” with a company name they can’t remember (if they had a company name) who showed up with a bucket and a squeegee. I get people all the time who are impressed with all my gear: ettore pouches, boab, scraper, doodlebug with white pad etc. They’ve never seen anyone with a bunch of window cleaning equipment before. It’s funny the other day I was cleaning a lady’s windows and she was really impressed with my gear, apparently the last guy who did them didn’t have a belt or a boab!

It seems like a lot of the guys who do window cleaning in my area do it as part of a bunch of other odd jobs - trimming hedges, mowing lawns etc There doesn’t seem to be any dedicated window cleaning companies where I operate. I wonder if it’s a rural thing.

Carpet cleaners on the other hand are all over the place. But I wonder if it’s because guys who go into carpet cleaning generally have more money. If they can fork over 50K for carpet cleaning equipment, then they can afford to advertise. I think that a lot of window cleaners are the “bucket bob” type I described. WCR is the meeting place for all the pros, so I think we forget (at least I do) that there are a lot of window cleaners without even standard equipment out there.

I looked into carpet cleaning in the past mainly to get through the slow winter months. As others have said, carpet cleaning isn’t any better than window cleaning in the winter so it doesn’t really work for that goal.

I have office cleaning jobs to help me get through the winter. During the sunny months, I sometimes curse my office cleaning jobs because I am not making nearly as much money per hour but come winter I am thanking my lucky stars that I have them. The janitorial work = a steady paycheck. Plus janitorial work is at night so it doesn’t interfere with my window cleaning jobs. However, I have days where I wake up at 6 am to clean windows for 9 hours, go home eat dinner and then have to go out and be a janitor until 10 o’clock at night!

Even from an E-Myth perspective? Are you stuck in owner-operator mode?

I have to agree with Lance. Someone tried to sell us an expensive Cybex rotary scrubber, shown in the pictures above, at the place I worked and we blew it out the door with our HWE system. We had HOT water 240 degrees and great chemicals!
