Sorry, I was speed reading. For these particular smudged windows I would probably just use a powerful surfactant. Simple Green will do it at a price, but maybe a wet flannel & a high dose of Dawn in the effected area. If the simple green doesn’t work - please give this a go.
That’s what I’ve been using, a very high dose of Dawn on a white scrub pad, lots of scrubbing, 5 to 10 minute dwell, then go over with T-bar and GG4 solution from my bucket, then squeegee. Too much time and effort, not to mention the mess from the Dawn. There’s got to be something better. I’m hoping that either Simple Green or commercial grade spray foam glass cleaner will do the trick. I actually hope the spray foam will be the one because it would be so quick and easy to use.
I may be wrong - but I can’t see Simple green doing that much better. I’m always wary of foam cleaners after I had one melt a plastic awning in a test spot. I used to clean a fish & chip shop fairly easy with GG4 & porcupine, so I was quite enthusiastic about posting my original answer. Do you use hot water on these marks?
The jobs I mentioned that I use the spray foam stuff on is actually KFC’s, so I’m familar with this chicken grease stuff. Seems like when they switched to the new kind of cooking oil, the ‘no trans fatty crap’, the windows became much harder to clean… which makes ya wonder how it’s any healthy-er.
Buy anyhow… try using a microtiger strip washer as well.
there’s this one pizza place they put on the tomato sauce next to the window and when I come it’s a blasty blast to get off…that’s why I got a super abrasive scrubber
First of all, I’d be careful with the microtiger on tinted glass.
And, go get that foam, you will not regret it, we did a house today, and the 2 windows on the garage were TRASHED, and I ran out of simple green, so yy wife decided to use the foam … and voila, effortless shine (® or should be trademarked soon)
SprayWay, just bought 2 four-packs at Sam’s for around $8, cheaper than HD.
Micah, I quoted you because I agree with you 120% on the foam, not about the microtiger.
Just to avoid misunderstandings
No problem, thanks for the word of caution about the microtiger. I didn’t think the bristles were stiff enough to cause any harm to the tinted glass that I clean…
Then again, you wouldn’t notice it anyhow… the stuff is so old and banged up anyway. Impossible to make it look halfway clean due to the age. I’ll keep it away from pretty tint though.
Fear the foam!
i’m with you on this one… I’m going out this weekend and grab some simple green. There’s even a simple green that comes in a spray bottle. I’m also gonna try the window cleaning spray that micah mentioned as well
Micah, I’ve already worn out one MicroTiger, working on my second, and recently bought a third for backup. I like the MicroTiger a lot but the stitching on the velcro tab fasteners came undone on the first one I had way before the actual sleeve was worn.
I wish they had the metal snaps instead of the cheezy sewn in velcro tabs.
I always use a Pulex micro fiber (the blue one) for interior work but the Micro Tiger is great for exterior.
I have used warm water on this gig before when it was the first gig of the day. It was hot water when I poured it at home but only warm by the time I got to the gig. But hot or even warm water does help.
I still need to try something more powerful than Dawn for this gig, even with warm or hot water. I’ll get the Simple Green and spray foam and report back next week as to how it worked on this greasy gig.
NO !!!
there is buetal in there
Turner Clean, thanks for the warning on that! I think I’ll just get the spray foam and see how it will work on the grease spots as a pre-treatment (dwell) before scrubbing the whole window.
There’s buetal in the spray foam not Simple Green.
Tony, thanks for the clarification. I definitely want to go with the safest of the two cleaners so if Simple Green doesn’t have buetal then that will be my choice.
The foaming spray I have clearly states it’s safe for tinted windows…
That’s great!!! Then I still have two choices to try on the greasy chicken gig. I would prefer to be able to use the foam since it clings well to a vertical surface and it’s quick and easy to use.
I’ll get a couple of cans of the spray foam by Aero. I think it’s called “Kleer View” and is available at the local janitor supply store. I’ll check the instructions and ingredients before using on tinted film.
If that doesn’t work I’ll try Simple Green.
from a scientist there is buetal in the simple green it is .09%
as such it does not have to be listed, there are also 2 other, components in there at .07-.08 that are not all natural as well!
That would explain why it isn’t listed as an ingredient on the bottle. Ther is also no warning about using it on tint so I assume it’s safe.
I may have covered this…
with the faom spray…you need to look for prints first…then watch as the spray hits…the greasy prints cause the foam to separate…almost in the shaep of the print. Let it dwell for a few secs then hit again, the foam will fill in and the grease has been disolved.
squeegee out.
that can get expensvie though
