This is a video I made of doing a FREE Sample Cleaning of an Awning for a customer.
I love giving away FREE samples of my work. It really shows the improvement Awning Cleaning can make. It shows both my customer and myself what results we will get. (And, yes, if the customer doesn’t get their awning cleaned it will remind them everyday of how dirty their awnings actually are.)
Thanks Wayne for another information filled video. My question on this one is: Don’t you think it kinda forces the customers hand when you make that front portion that much different than the rest? I mean perhaps a less conspicuous section might be better. As it is, they can’t say no without having a huge clean spot smack dab in front of an awning. That is unless you clean the whole thing if he is unhappy with having it the way you left it.
I can’t answer for Wayne, but when giving pressure washing demo’s I would preface the free demo by saying something like “I’m sure you’ll see a significant difference, if my work impresses you, and you’re satisfied, do I have your business?”
This prequalifies them so I don’t waste my time on a free demo when they’re not serious, and also lets them know that they’re going to have an area that looks a lot different from the rest.
Thanks for the good comments. It’s always great fun sharing videos with you.
Dormatax, Winsol makes great awning cleaning chemicals and Chris and Alex at WCR sells them.
Micah, I used a Canon SD880 IS to make the video. I did get the job and will be cleaning them this weekend.
Tony, thanks for all your great videos and comments. I sure enjoyed watching the videos from your conference. Maybe next year I will make it and meet you in person.
I will try and video this cleaning project as I complete it this weekend and share it with you in a few days.
Dwight, I always get the customer’s permission before giving a FREE sample cleaning explaining that under that dirty awning is a clean awning waiting to shine. - Most of the FREE sample cleaning I give is requested by the customers because I promote it’s on my website and advertisements.
It would be great to have you there Wayne! Let’s talk about that as I would love to have you do a talk on the value of awning cleaning as an add on for wcers.
Tony, that sound like a good idea. Awning Cleaning is a great add on business for window cleaners. We’ll talk in a few months about my availablity. Thanks and keep your great videos coming, I always look forward to seeing them.
Rednecktex7, thanks for your comments. That awning fabric is a canvas type material. The brand used on this awning is called, “Sunbrella” and is used a lot in the awning world.
Hi p2149, Yes, when things slow down it would be nice talking with you. It’s always great to exchange thoughts and ideas.
Hi Rednecktex7, Yes, Delco does sell some awning cleaners but with mold and mildew on awning fabric it requires some additional special chemicals and training to apply them. The worst thing someone can do is apply the wrong chemicals to awning fabrics that are to old or damaged to withstand the cleaning process. - I found out the hard way early on in my business by damaging a customer’s awnings. Thank goodness I have a good friend in the awning manufacturing business and he was able to help salvage my behind for just a few hundred dollars. - As in every business there is a learning curve of what can be done and how to do it. After being in this business for 16 years I’m still learning new things. About once a year I still miss judge something and end up repairing a awning or replacing it. It’s a bummer, but part of the business. - One of the biggest things I learned was how to inspect an awning before cleaning it to make sure the fabric and seams can withstand the cleaning process and that not all awnings can be safely cleaned, only about 60 to 70% are in good enough shape to be cleaned.
Paul at Dallas Window Supply is a good guy and if he doesn’t have it he recommends WCR! I was there on Friday and spent a hour with him chewing the fat.
Yes, sometimes I will be paid to clean just one awning. I have a $120 minimum, so I will be able to clean 3 to 5 other awnings at the same location for the same price. I charge between $.25 to $2.00 per square foot depending how dirty the awnings are.
