How do you decide a min. amount for service?

I see on the board alot that people say they have a min. $ amount on residentials How do you all determine what that min. is? Where I will be working most of my jobs there is only 1 other window cleaning company and its a fairly big city, Homes usually range from $130,000-$180,000 and nice subs homes in the $300,000-$450,000 range. We also have the small subs in the $150,000-$250,000 range. Are any of your price mins. based on this. If not what should I be looking for. I’m guessing but I was thinking maybe $125 min. does this sound high? let me know and thanks in advance. I have learned so much from this great site.

I’m currently at 1.5 times my hourly goal. For example, I recently removed tree pitch from 3 panes for my minimum charge.

I do not offer a set price for a range of home sizes or a range of number of windows, though many WC’ers do.

Think about your drive time and your equipment set up time. Remember, you don’t earn a dime unless you’re washing a window. How many windows do you have to clean to off set that unproductive time? Charge for that much work. I have heard between $80 and $125 a lot.

I know that there are some on here that have a minimum. Like Chris and Alex have a $125. I have a 1.5 hours min at $75/hour. So I guess mine is around $110. I really never have anything that cheap though.

If you’re looking at pricing residential, you need to consider how long it took you to get there, how long did the job take, what equipment/tools/payroll did it require, and what you want to make as an hourly requirement.

My avg residential job is $300. If it’s just me–5 hours. If I send the crews----3.5 hours. If it’s both—2 hours.

Yeah the 2 hours deal looks great, but I also have to pay:

Insurance
Taxes
wages
Fuel
more insurance
marketing
equipment

shall I go on?

I am trying to figure out my time issues as well, naturally being new so I am slower but I want to have a goal to shoot for. You said your avg residential job is 5 hours if just you. About how many panes are cleaned for that avg time frame?

Thanks,

Hey Joie,
Do you have Joel Andrews new video on advanced window cleaning? His new one not the old one. When you look like him everything else should take care of its self.

No I haven’t seen it, I will try to find it!

Thanks

Where can one find this video?

My current minimums are $70 for residential, and $15 for commercial (for new jobs, I have a few jobs that are at $10 currently). But I am looking at increasing the residential rate.

My Res min. is $59. I like to keep it low just due to the fact that we have a ton of condos and town homes here with 2,3 maybe only 4 windows. I gain alot of work from communities like this. sure $59 isn’t much but they add up. Some days I can make more in less time doing little jobs like this than a $400 job. Now if you only service areas with large homes than your min should be higher to make it worth it to you.

Ours is $125. We have a bit of a drive for work and it makes no sense to me to charge less for a job when we have time invested just getting to the job.

My minimum charge is $149:

I’m actually thinking of raising it this year

Most of the major window washing supply houses carry it. It’s about $50.
Window Cleaning Techniques by Joel Andrews

I’ve had Joel Andrew’s DVD for several years now. I learned a great deal from it when I was starting out.

I have a $99 dollar min and I have never had to call anybody on it. In fact usually what happens is the person has twice as many windows as they say they have over the phone. I don’t clean by square foot however as I know many do. I clean by the number of windows. I think you will find that you will almost never have to use your min rule.

As far as no other window washers in town but one, I doubt that, their are many window washers that don’t advertise online or in the phone book. Also many janitorial services offer window cleaning as well as some maid services. So you probably have more competition than you realize.

this year i raised my min. for in/out residential to $149.00 ($79.00 outs only, and $70.inside) So far its worked really well.

Are you saying min per hr right?..I try $60-70 an hr residential and higher for commercial…am I way off or is that about right?

My minimum is per house not per hour.

minimum per house. as far as minimum per hour i try for about $80-$120/hr on residential because you get slow downs from time to time with the job taking a bit longer than expected.

I don’t understand stating a minimum for an inside or an outside. Your minimum charge is just the amount of money that you need to make driving to the job and taking your gear off of the truck worth it. Mine is $65 dollars, so if you have 1 window to clean and that’s all you want it’s $65. If you have more than $65 worth of work then your minimum is just a useless number.

This in no way caps you, or limits the amount that you can charge. But it keeps Grandma So-And-So from calling you to clean her 2 window apartment that takes 45 minutes of driving to, set up, and pack up, for $10.
