Roof fall arrest recommendation

Yep

Is this for the fire departement Lou?

well the ones out here are stucco over a framed and lathed base as opposed to unreinforced brick perhaps like I am picturing

But as I checked it out, it doesn’t really help since the chimney can be anywhere on the roof line, but usually is just onone side, which wont help much anyway

its tough, cause you cant spend a half hour tying off for 3 minutes of work all the time

Dejay alot of new house’s don’t have tree’s planted. Their lucky to have one in the front yard. If the back yard has a Taxus shurb you could proberly tie off to that if its been there for years… Its the hardest shrub I ever dug up with a bobcat.

Yes Chris its a fire dept thing…We use it if theres nothing to tie off too. Mostly for large animal rescue.

Prime example is when Michigan about 10 years expanded on an Federal OSHA standard for roofers. They tried to mandate that any one with a potential fall of 10 feet or more needed to have a fall arrest system. They could not enforce it becuase nobody could manafacture a tie off point other than the lag down type that would come close to the fall pressures of a roofer that did strain the system let alone the tighten up lenght. ie.185 pound man drops 5’ = 780 pounds drop force on tie off point. I still see window cleaners use 2 paparpet clamps with say 150’ 7/16" kernmantle rope with a carabiner in center for thier saftey line. Some will tie back the roof roller on that line as well!!!

IMHO and I am certinally no expert. Most if not all safety devices used for roof work (other than in the construction phase ie; roof jacks etc.) tend to give a dangerous false sence of security. And tend to motivate us to take risks we shouldn’t.

Interesting set up Lou. I commend those who risk thier lives for us and our animals. Don’t know how you guys do it. If I am looking at it correctly the problem with that setup for humans is that of course we tend to weigh more than many animals. Second, the counter weight is only a part of the effectiveness of that rig. The front leg of that tripod in a fall arrest will not only have to carry 1/3 of the rig weignt but in addition to that almost all of the drop tonage that the arrest will exert. That leg would need to be at least 4" dia. non seam welded sch.80 pipe. It would need to be angle braced as well. . Sorry to rant guys but my brother was a rigging saftey designer. A d he blew holes in all my DIY window rig designs.

My appoliges to Lou. My intent was not to downplay the value of men or the rig pictured in his post.

The animals we use this set up on is for large animals…Cows Horses ect…I really shouldn’t have posted that picture. The amount of stakes we use relies on what kinda of soil its being put in. I still think the cargo net and water tank is the best thing if you don’t have a tie off.
