I already have a company name and website for my housecleaning service but figure it would be better to separate the window cleaning as it’s own identity (feel free to comment on this). So now I have to go hunt for an available domain name and I’m running into questions.
Now I’m wondering if it is more sensible to include the word(s) windows or windowcleaning in the actual domain name. So let’s say the company name is CrazyBright (don’t worry, it’s not) is it wiser to have the domain name be
The first is easiest to type but doesn’t convey anything about the service. The second indicates windows but could be taken as a window installer. The third is pretty obvious but is a long-ass name to type. The fourth says it’s a service company without indicating what service.
Then it’s also a question of expanding. If I go into power washing or some other service, the third is now excluding that service while the first covers it (by omission) while the fourth covers it easily.
And then there’s SEO… you get points for shorter, lose points for too long, gain points for clarity, lose points for confusion or strange words (yahoo? google?)…
Seemed like a good idea at the time when I bought them. I finally started to do the SEO thing, and the web guy who is doing it seemed to think I did right by buying them. I’d be interested in hearing what the experts say, too.
seth, i think it helps with your ranking when you have more domain names. I dunno, im a newb to that too, i just started myself. Maybe Doug in SD can help.
YES, it does help, altho it is a small part of the puzzle of SEO. My domain has windows in the word, but I did not know then what I know now. What will help even more is if you put a dash to seperate the word. Like point-loma-window-cleaning.com or arizona-window-cleaning .com. This way the search engine will see the break, and recognize the word window.
There is a guy here in san diego who came from chicago and started his biz. here and chose the name san-diego-window-cleaning-now.com and he is already on the first page for san diego window cleaning. Which is the most searched for phrase here. Not bad. So, yes. For now untill the algorythms change, it will help VERY much but do not forget to make the title tags and content match your keywords or the relevance to the search will be alittle off.
I don’t have any of my keywords (San Diego window cleaning) in my URL (streakfreesd.com) but still bounce between the #1-3 spots for “San Diego window cleaning”.
So yeah, it’s not necessary but every bit helps especially in competitive areas.
There are only 10 spots on the first page of googles organic listings, and if you have more than 10 window cleaning companies that want to be on page 1 in your area, you will need all the help you can get.
Theres alot of good free search engine advice right here on these forums, just search for SEO*, google, search engine optimization, etc…
