Most of the houses around here are either wood or stone/brick, but I just finished CCU on a new house that is stucco. The builder wanted to make sure I didn’t put my ladder up against the stucco, because it would “dent it”. It wasn’t a problem with this house because I could pole most of it. Is this something I need to watch out for if I ever come across another stucco house?
I have a friend who stuccoed and plastered for a living and he told me the coat is only 1/16" thick. I’ve seen dented stucco and dryvit walls a number of times. So I would say there is validity to the builder’s concern.
Don’t builders also utilize some type of foam below stucco on decorative (protruding) designs around windows, doors, etc.?
This is a synthetic stucco system. It is a base of styrofoam that is covered w/ a base coat and top coat of “plaster”. It is easily damaged by ladders or diredt hits from baseballs, hail, etc…
Genuine stucco is much more stable so you may want to confirm on each job which type you’re dealing with.
Tony is right. Real stucco is solid stuff.
What we see down here, and what you’re describing, is EIFS or Dryvit. It’s a thin skin of plaster over stryrofoam sheets. Very easily damaged.
Did you have a glass wavier ??
