Out of boredom I Googled the word “squeegee” and ended up at a site about Ettore Steccone. I found it to be a very interesting 5 page article. Here’s a quote from one section of the article that I found to be very interesting:
"Part of what makes window washing such a chore is that homeowners insist on doing it with wadded-up paper towels or newspaper, spray cleaner, and a ton of elbow grease. “All that rubbing isn’t a good idea,” says Brent Weingard, owner of Expert Window Cleaners in New York City. “You’re just moving dirt around from one spot to another and putting a static charge on the glass, which attracts dust and dirt. As soon as you finish, the window looks dirty again.”
After reading this I started thinking that maybe these words could be utilized in marketing our professional window cleaning services, perhaps in the form of a flyer. It seems that the average Joe or Jane doesn’t really know how to work a squeegee proficiently and when some try they get frustrated and give up, or just do a half a s s e d job.
Maybe if we point out the points quoted above to potential customers, especially ones that are hard headed and continue trying to spray and wipe their windows clean, we can convince them to let a pro clean their windows once and for all.
I immediately recognized these words from another window cleaners site (a well respected member of these boards). Interesting indeed, I actually really was impressed as well, and thought about copying it onto my website, but didn’t want to copy his conent (even though we are on opposite sides of the country). I think I might re-word and use it afterall
I use ABC Glisten with a drop of dawn in it as as my soap.
On the bottle it says something about a static reducing property in it. Whenever I am talking to a customer and giving a bid, I mention that I will be putting a dust repellent solution on the glass. I tell them the surfactant that I am using, ( I never say soap, they are hiring me as a professional and I want to make sure to let them know that I know more about window cleaning than them), as anti static properties in it. I then explain to them that if you have clothes in a clothes dryer, when you pull them out you have static electricity because of the rubbing together.
I then tell them when you use windex or any other cleaning solution where you have to rub and buff the glass to get the solution off, you are postively charging the glass, which means any dust flying in the air will stick to your window. I then proudly say, that we squeegee off the window, and as you know, rubber is a non conductor of electricty, therefore we are negatively charging the window, so any dust floating in the air will float on by.
I’ll always end by saying, “window cleaning isn’t rocket science, but if you know the correct tips and tricks, that is the only way you’ll have a perfectly clean flawless window”.
We do about 600 or so residential customers a year, and you’d be amazed at how many people, when they call us back or we call them back, they say, “Be sure to put that dust repellent solution on”.
