It’s cold air that usually cruises around the arctic.
But it’s dropped down (further) south, and a high pressure front in Eastern Canada is keeping it pushed down here.
Looks like it happens about every 20 years

John, for the first time in years, I’m afraid to go outside. It was -55 wind chill this morning. I know I did cold weather survival in the military at -60, but I was a lot younger and a lot stupider back then. “Weather” is all we can think about up here.
-16 air temp, -50 with wind chill today. Not the best day to be snow blowing!
