How far will you travel for a residential job?
Ours is 60 minutes, but we are thinking of expanding it to 90 minutes. Currently we will go over an hour for a $50 travel fee, but we are thinking of advertising in that 60 -90 minute away mark.
There are less people in my county now than there were before the civil war. I have to drive. I try to stay under an hour, but I will go over that for a bigger job, $600-$700+. I have a lot of local customers, 10-20 minutes, and 3 towns within 30-45 minutes.
Good Luck,
There is so much traffic congestion around my area, it’s not uncommon to take an hour to drive 10 miles in morning traffic. The bulk of my work is probably 10-15 miles away.
I don’t go by how far I’ll go by minutes. I go by counties or State (I hate crossing the Potomac River into VA.). Then it usually depends on how large the potential job is or how busy we are at the time.
We go 60 minutes as that will cover several counties for us. Most of my work is w/in a 45 minute drive.
I voted for 60 minutes because while most of my residential jobs are within 45 minutes, I’d probably travel 60 minutes before I started adding money on top for travel.
As long as I’m making money, and not putting other jobs on the back burner, I’ll drive.
I should add that we just cut back from 90 minutes as it seemed we were not landing any quotes when we went out that far. It seems that the prices were considerably cheaper in that region compared to where we are doing most of our work.
I too have thought about traveling further out. Then I think about the cost to pay our guys for “Wind Shield Time”
I like to keep it within 30 miles or 30 minutes driving time. I stay very busy within this area so no need to drive farther away.
Man, sweet! If there were no traffic around here most of our work would be less than a 30 minute drive.
True Dat!
There aint no way I am driving over an hour unless it is over 800 bucks and can be done in one day.
Ohh man, I’ve stuck myself in some pretty nice jobs way out of my service area, at the end one round trip for the quote, another for the work itself, and a third one for “miscalculations”
I don’t get it why is this poll set in minutes instead of miles. At least that’s what I use to decide if I go or not. Sometimes I’ll go if I don’t know the area pretty well just to see if we can land some more jobs out of that one, but always making some previous research over the web using tax records, and satellite views of the area.
I want to add that if I’m REALLY busy I try to stay close and even turn down out of area jobs, but if there’s not a lot going on I’ll go out of my area.
I finished a job on Tuesday, real estate agent, landed her vacation house on the coast, and another house she sold two days before she’s gonna to get the new owners in touch with me, all of that around 60 miles each way.
Generally, max time is 45 minutes. I’ve traveled up 90 min. on a few jobs. It’s got to be a big job for me to travel 90 minutes away. So I guess what Im saying is, if the money is right, I’ll go the distance.
Im open…depending on Job. Anything over 1/2 hour I price over phone
CHRIS>>>I Think you should Stay with 60 Minutes…
Do you calculate the value of service on the basis of time ($/hr) or miles ($/mi)?
