He would not likely make much money the first year. Your wife is right.
Many of us built our businesses from scratch, the hard way (like you), and were able to generate very good window cleaning incomes.
Window Cleaning is the most over-payed profession on the planet. I am not afraid to admit it. It doesnât âsoundâ like it would be a good career choice, and itâs definitely not a glamorous one, but the money is there like crazy.
Where else can you earn $100+/hr, with 3% overhead?
That being said, there are always risks when you start a new business, but they are worth it. Tell her not to worry, give her a gentle kiss on the forehead, and get serious about building your new window cleaning business.
I wouldnât say the most overpayed on the planet. There are alot of even higher paying jobs/careers out there, you just donât see them. Take realestate for instance, those guys make big bucks and a lot of them have zero overhead (working out of office for corp company). What about outsourcing, once they build up their customer base all they do is make phone calls, and make a sick hourly rate. Youâd be surprised how many there are out there. More importantly itâs about the person making things happen.
With any business itâs how much you put into it. I had an employee quit last November after a year and half. He figured the 1k a week I was paying him wasnât enough - he could make the $600 to $800 a day he was producing â for himself. Well he licensed, got insurance, business cards, the whole deal (he thought) - Called me in April for his job back He didnât see the âfinding the customersâ part of this business.
I hear you. I still think weâre the most overpayed profession given half-inch high barriers to entry.
Although I am seriously looking at real estate. As you said, insane commission schedules for those guys.
Whatâs also cool about window cleaning - Once you have enough set up to hire employee/employees you can persue other things, such as real estate. I started another business in february which my wife will totally run once itâs to that stage. Selling Ink/Toner refilled cartridges. But for now we both are marketing it and gaining a couple customers every day out (Just like when I started the windows) - Very exciting/!! Iâll never give up the windows though. The business is like my child. I gave birth to it, nurtured it, and now itâs a pain in the ass teengager
Good luck with the real estate. Itâs a perfect fit for what we do, you can do it partime and put as much work as you choose into it. With the economy the way it is, IMO not a bad time to diversifyâŚ
I have to say this. Sorry. Although there is a lot of praise for window cleaning, and claims of making the big money, many of those saying how good it is are tryiing to make money by selling it to others so they donât have to do it themselves. Evidentially, up for window cleaners means selling it to others so they can rise above it.
I was off the list for a while and this post along with some others were promptly removed from the home page. I assume this is because the posts did not serve your purpose.
This list claimed to be above the other list because it allowed more freedom that was not in the other list. Now we have censorship
in regards to the home page, so what is the real difference? Arenât you mostly concerned with your own agenda and wasnât that what you were criticizing about the other list? You can do as you wish, but the truth is the truth.
Merv, I donât control what appears on the home page. If you have a problem then I suggest you talk to Chris. Maybe he can explain it to you. As it stands right now both the threads you are complaining about are on the homepage when I look at it.
I donât think I follow you, Merv.
I spent the last 11 years in the biz, and sold my company 3 months ago, mid-March 2010.
Or do you mean that we are suggesting that the actual window cleaning work is beneath us or something like that?
Iâm curious as to what you mean.
Nothing was moved off the homepage, what happens threads get buried by other posts naturally by people posting in other threads. If someone re posts in this thread it goes back up to the top.
Thank you. They were off my home page and then came back on my home page and then went off again. It happened several times.
They were not buried.
Sorry if I jumped the gun. I didnât really know what was happening.
Where you looking at this page:
or the whats new button?
The stuff in that whats new button completely disappears once youâve read it once, until someone makes another post.
thanks Merv

Wow.
Iâm surprised. Weak market? What was the nail in the coffin?
I use the New Posts link (under Home.)
The Whatâs New? link is on the far right, next to Search.
