Carhartt Flannel Lined pants can work as well or better than cheap baselayers under your normal pants.
Yes, I am a gear junkie:D[/QUOTE]
How cold does it have to be for flannel pants to work? When it gets into the 40’s once in a while I use thermals. I don’t like the binding feel of them and wonder if flannel lined would be better. Thanks.

Thats the perfect temps for flannel lined over thermals. The only problem is then going into the elderly womans house, who wants it to feel like August in Miami in her house.

Cold is all relative to what your body gets used to, 40’s and I would probably be wearing a short sleeve short, 80’s are a heatwave around here. -11 at the beginning of this week! Moisture is still key, Humidity in the air is bone chilling, and makes 25 feel much worse than a dry 10.
Right now we are 20’s in the work morning and MAYBE hit 50 in afternoon, so its flannel lined without thermals for me, and yes they solve that binding feeling, loose like your normal Carhartts so you can still breathe when you get into the elderly womans house (maybe she needs to hang out at the top of the ladder where its 90 degrees:D), the other reason to layer, you don’t want to get all sweaty inside and then freeze when you go to load the truck. Your body doesn’t like 40 degree spikes in temperature change.
Yeah. it doesn’t really get cold for long around here but when we do have a cool snap the little old ladies turn the insides of their houses into Death Valley.
I learned to wear lots of layers so I have plenty to pull off when I go inside.
Just some advise. When your layering for cold weather, do not put cotton clothing on as a first layer, Cotton will hold moisture and you will be freezing all day. Your first layer should be a product designed to wick moisture away from your body. Under Armour makes some really great shirts for cold weather and hot weather. As far as bottoms. Stay away from flannel Wear wool since Wool breathes and is temperature regulating. Ibex Outdoor clothing has some really great cold weather garments. Hope this helps.
Doug and I worked together today and I was in shorts and a Tshirt. I was sweating my butt off too. I dont think i could hang washing windows in the snow.
Move to Vegas! No but seriously when I had the frigid days back in PA working with Dan W. it was definitely unbearably in Stroudsburg at 6 am. Dressed in layers, wore thermals, pair of thin glove and then window cleaning gloes obver them, 2 pairs of socks and hat and scarf but I wore thinner jacket because after a while it starts to warm up or you think its warming up,right. I also would bring along these packets you shake and they instantly get hot, they’re like $1 for 2 you can find at Walmart and kept them in my pockets so when I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore I’d stick them in my pockets between jobs. I still don’t have all the feeling in one of my fingers. Here in Vegas we of course have the reverse, we try getting our work done in the summer very early.
Thermals? Gloves? Carhart? What is all of this stuff? Sorry guys, we only get about a week of cold weather here,( 40 is cold to us ) Man, i love florida. Good luck this winter guys, i’ll bee thinkin about ya, ( when i’m surfing )
layer up for the early morning hours. As the sun comes out you can layer down a little.
For my solution I use windshield washer fluid diluted with water accordingly.
As far as gloves look up seal skinz, they cant be fully submerged but they are waterproof and they keep your hands warm. I tried the neoprene but they’re bulky, its difficult to go in your pocket if needed, and you cant feel dry spots on your detail towel.
P.S. Working outdoors in the winter is miserable, but its a good time to get a step ahead of your competition. A lot of guys slack in the winter months.!
So we all talk about layers but when it gets downright cold it gets downright cold!
What are you guys using for a nice, heavy winter jacket? For those days when it’s 0 degrees and windy?
layer, layer, layer! I find it difficult to work in a coat/jacket. We use under armor or long johns, couple prs sox, gloves. Just bought a pr of timberland waterproof boots. Hope they work. If my hands or feet get cold, im done.
