Arc welding equipment on extreme gutter freezes?

I know we can use several methods for getting ice out of gutters.

  1. Ice pick
  2. Heat gun or hair dryer
  3. Electric tape
  4. Electric blanket?
    and last but not least…

Has anyone ever used welding equipment for melting ice?
I believe it is used on plumbing under houses, but haven’t seen anything pertaining to gutters. I wonder if it could be used with vynyl gutters?

I know this may seem loony, but I am curious. Has anyone ever tried it? If so, how did it go?

Thanks in advance!
vic

you forgot rock salt. never tried it but it works on the driveway right?

That kinda scares me Vic

And you could electrocute yourself in the process.

I’m sure it’d work but it’s probably not a great idea.

I had a customer that was really nervous about us using a heat gun… (could supposedly strip off enamel or something) I can’t imagine most homeowners would be comfortable with you putting a flame to their house

I’m not going to do it, Chris.
I was just wondering if anyone ever had, and how it turned out.
It would definitely be a last resort, if at all, I think…
Still learning!

Howdy Shawn…

I think -The KENNEWICK-MAN- might be talking about oxy-acetylene rather then an Arc-welder ! You know what I mean right? A gas torch !

Is that what your talking about MR.Vic-ster ? If that’s the case I think that would be kinda pricey…but if you had one handy then it sounds like maybe it just might work !

An arc welder is not designed to do something like that, I use to install wrought iron and you’d have ground the gutter and then hit some area with the welding rod, and where would you touch it without screwing up the outside of the gutter, you’d just burn a hole !

The gutter sheet metal is to thin to be hitting it with a welding rod…Now a gas torch, hmmmmmm that just might cut the ice pretty, pretty, pretty, fast if you go from the inside and watch that you don’t start a fire with the house. If you do it with a torch on the outside you’d most likely leave burn marks or burn the paint, and then you’d screw up the visual !
