We have been experiencing a very active August thus far and it made me wonder if anyone else is seeing more activity this year over previous years. How’s your August?
Busier, but last year was brutal, so this might be normal but when compared to 2008 anything is better
Last August was pathetic. Didn’t get busy until the last week. That’s why I usually like to take a week off this time of the year.
This year is way busier. I’ll still be taking a week off at the end but it will be tough to get everything done.
Well, its only the 8th so I guess we are basing this on our calanders…and if that is the case, right now I have some holes in (that will hopefully fill up).
Last month was GREAT…but this month may not be as good…so far. Like I say, for now it is too early to tell.
Fully filled for august. I planned for this in June with contacting past customers and potential customers wtih phone calls. I think part of the reason I was able to fully book is the economy. I felt that last two years people were either getting their kids ready for school and the summer end or going on vacations. This year I don’t hear much about vacations from anyone, other then my wife. “Let’s go to Europe” LOL YEAH RIGHT!!. I’m running.
I’ve been running hard and steady since March 1st (except for my one week vacation in July) and will continue into mid-August. I’ll still have work the second part of August but left some spaces so my arm can get some rest. I left those vacant spaces and started scheduling September.
I’ve got that repetitive strain injury on my right elbow but have had to keep working anyway. The weird thing is that I feel pain when I pick up a 20 oz. soda but I can wrestle a 28 ft Water Fed Pole and the 24 ft gutter cleaning pole throughout the day.
Aspirin is a big part of my diet lately.
Sorry to hear that…I feel for ya. How old are you man? Has that been going on a long time? Is the pain getting worse?
Thanks Tory! I’m 50 yrs old and have had this same problem before some yrs back but not from window cleaning. It’s basically just tennis elbow.
I started noticing the pain back in late June. I’ve started doing certain things with my left hand/arm instead of my right hand/arm in order to allow it to heal.
I’ve been taking Glucosamine/Condroiten for over a month now. I don’t notice it getting worse so hopefully it’s mending itself.
I had gotten in the bad habit of often scrubbing as well as squeegeeing with my right hand. Ideally I should’ve been doing all of the scrubbing with my left and squeegeeing with my right.
Also I’ve done a ton of power washing this year. I really have been working like a dog. I need to slow down some and not put my body through so much abuse. Work is good but we don’t need to overdo it at the expense of our well being.
Calls for window cleaning have slowed down this month. Booked out two weeks for glass, after that we have several caulking jobs scheduled that will help keep revenue flowing for August.
We are doing much better than 2008. Ref. and new customer are way up there.

August has started slower- more empty slots in my schedule this month, but after june and july its a nice little break, i think sept will pick up though, but thats when my hubby and I usually take a vacation. I’m hoping to get some new customers this month from postcards Ive passed out and be able to fit them in very quickly
I didn’t even want to read this thread because I thought that everbody would be putting words down like they were not hurting. We’ve lost 63% of our buisness. All that means to me is that I have to work in the field. My family is fine. All that means to my five formley employed, well payed and medically insured guys is something else all together.
And that sucks.
Things are slower this Aug. compared to 2008. We did 43 residential jobs last August, unless I start hitting the phone hard instead of letting everyone call me, I don’t think I’ll hit 40 this year.
last year August was our busiest month. So far this year its looking to be on the same track. The summer so far has been incredibly productive. Im really happy with the results of all our winter-spring marketing. Commercial work is almost non-existent though. Whatever.
August is the first month since March that I haven’t booked solid through to the end; yet! We have calls trickling in, so the last 2 weeks should fill up slowly. For me it’s way better than last year.
I decided to take advantage of Service Magic’s $50 sign up (compared to their normal $100) and have gotten 3 leads is three days. I’m still in the process of doing the estimates but hopefully this will bring in some more revenue for August.
Norgan,
I know what you are going thru. August is dead slow. I had a big project lined up after making fifty phone calls. It was a Government job. After the first day, the supervisor decides it is not in the budget and kicked us off. Even when I thought I had a job I didn’t. I have men with families depending on me to produce work. The stress is crushing. I hope the economy turns around soon. I don’t like the thought of laying off people who have worked so hard for me.
Where you located Matt? Ive slowed, but the past few months have been great, have your previous months been good or bad? If youve had good months before august i think its just a little break in business. The economy has been bad for a while and overall I think the wc biz has stayed decent thru it all, I think it will pick up in sept/ oct . That really sucks about the govt job…sorry to hear about that. Hang in there
I have managed to book all of August except for this 4th week of August. What I have noticed is a big drop off in calls to the office for estimates. This is the first time in 5 years of business that this has happened. I am glad for you WC’s that are doing well during these times and I feel bad for the WC’s who are not, for you WC’s hang in there it will get better. Well i’ve got to get on the phone and drum up some business for the next 3 weeks until my fall repeats come into play!! Good Luck too all!!
Hi, Window Girl!
We are in St. Louis, MO. Things are as bad as I’ve seen them in the twelve years we’ve been in business, Hell, in the twenty five years that I’ve been cleaning windows. Sent my crew home today. No work. Hopefully, you’re right and we just hit a dead spot between the summer and fall work. I hope I’m not bringing everyone down! I know things will turn around eventually. I just have to survive untill they do.
August was very slow for us, seems to be a common factor this month
Hopeful we can make up the loss, within the next four months
