I left a career of over 15 years as a firefighter (LOVED it) to support myself and my wife by doing window cleaning, roof cleaning, and pressure washing. We greatly simplified our lives and got ALL of our non-business expenses to under $1200.00 a month. I now work 2 or 3 days a week. We spend an average of 20 hours each week in volunteer work together, we have a ton of time for other pursuits, like recreation, etc. We have one of the strongest marriages of any couple we know, and we are truly happy. Wealthy we are not, but yes, this business has HELPED us get “rich”…It really is all in how you view it!

I’ve been cleaning windows 5-6 days a week since March, and it feels good. Sure, I have my tough days, but I ENJOY cleaning windows. I don’t necessarily like setting ladders in thorny jungles, or moving interior trinkets and heirlooms, but am getting used to that aspect of it.
I have passion for this occupation and wake up excited to work. I think this alone is a certain aspect of “richness”. It’s also very flexible. I coach rock climbing to kids in the evenings, which is great fun.
I’m still working for a couple folks, but can say “hey… don’t schedule me on the 8th…” and do my own work. I made ~$700 today. Not a huge money person, but that definitely helped. I personally like the freedom and flexibility of the work. I also like glass and don’t mind heights.
It may not be perceived as ‘glamorous’ work, but I honestly don’t care. If folks like me for who I am and not how I bring in money, I feel that’s more important. Even in a town where an average home costs $1m+, I’m happy doing this. It’s just my thing.
I was an engineer for 15 years, designed a lot of cool hardware, wrote a lot of software… but window cleaning is more fulfilling. It’s also more fun. And the potential to grow it is huge.
All though… I still have a itching desire to Rick Roll the public wi-fi at Starbucks using a pineapple. Give the bloggers blogging about blogs something to freak out about. But then I watch a Polzn Blades video and the urge subsides for a little bit. Plus I’m pretty sure that would be illegal or something.
If I can sell 2 more screen washers these baby’s are mine:
It’s a little late for water balloons but next year? Oh yeah, watch out!
No, to get rich as a rapper you need some talent. Or a record.
The BEST get rich scheme is politics. No talent? No problem. No brain? No problem. No ethics? That’s a bonus!
Case in point: one particular senator was watching the MARS rover, the MARS freakin rover, and she asked if it was going to go near where we planted the flag.
I had 3 jobs today, went home and scanned my invoices, ate dinner and now am brainstorming my business here on WCR. I’m single, young, and am not out drinking. I’m thinking about how to make the next week more efficient than the last… I’m thinking about shirt logos, website design, ladders, and trucks. 10:43pm on a friday.
Also, you have minimum royalties to pay each week. So guess how that feels when its so bad out you can’t clean… You still have to pay regardless of whether you clean or not and whether your have AR or not.
There are some owners in nice territories that don’t take home a paycheck for a couple of months during the slow season. There are more than a few who average less than minimum wage for slow months.
But there are some that are killing it all year.

Rich, No but you can defiantly build and expand into different services besides window cleaning to bring in more income. My goal is to build up my company to where I have guys I can depend on to go out and do gutter cleaning, roof cleaning, window cleaning, janitorial, pressure washing services, etc. …My goal isn’t to get rich I would like to jus have a strong dedicated group of workers I can rely on…
Agreed window cleaning alone is too seasonal and too labor intensive once other services are added like softwashing the profit and $ per hour increase dramatically. To “grow” rich window cleaning you can’t be a seasonal business.
