This is my first post on the forum. I’ve been following it for about a year or so now, and during that time have really appreciated all the ideas and suggestions from all of you. I’ve done windows for about 26 years or so, but took about 7 years off to pursue another goal, and am now back doing windows again up in the Pacific Northwest in Bellingham, WA.
Anyway, I got a call to give a bid on a house today. When I got there to take a look, I realized it’s basically construction clean-up. The house and windows are not new, so there are no stickers, but it looks like they’ve been doing extensive remodeling and all the windows are covered with paint, dirt, and grime. Of course before even considering doing them, I’ll have to get a signed waiver. But before talking to them again, the question that I wanted to present here on the forum has to do with four domed Plexiglass skylights that this house has.
They seem to not have been protected whatsoever during the construction and are really bad; as bad as the windows themselves it seems. My only question is whether anyone has had success removing that much dirt, grime, and possibly even paint from Plexiglass. In my opinion it seems impossible to do without totally scratching up the skylights, but wanted to see if there were any other ideas.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have.
Sincerely,
Vince Hamilton

It’s tough enough cleaning plexi skylights carefully without construction-related debris; I’d probably ask that the contractor clean them without scratching them. My typical method is using a hogshair brush and clean GG4 solution, then rinsing thoroughly with DI water. Many times even a clean, soft cloth van introduce scratches…
I just did a similar job last week. I did a CCU on an 18’ diameter lexon window. After cleaning using regular methods and not getting the result I wanted, I called the manufacturer and got a great tip. Maguires make a product thats used for cleaning plastic windshields on motorcycles. I bought it at Autozone for $8.00 and it worked great. I would recommend it.
plastx isn’t worth a crap. I am big into painting cars etc(went to school for it), anything mequires isn’t worth a crap in my experience. 90% of body shops will use 3M products.
everyone swears by it for motorcycles. you can get it at most motorcycle shops.
Your a man equipped with great knowledge, that point about the windshield cleaner is so basic and easy but absolutely stupendous ! You my friend must live in the “VALLEY OF THE SONS OF ETTORE”…
dange, mquires plastx doesn’t work all that good. I’ve tried it on several things on cars and it didn’t do much. didn’t really work much at all on headlight lenses.
Thanks Brett and Yamaharacer for your suggestions. I’ll check into them when I run into Plexiglass windows or skylights. The thing about this job is that the skylights most likely have paint over spray on them in addition to all the dirt. Guess I could offer to clean them with one of the products you suggested (with a signed scratch waiver) and do as much as I can on them.
Really…I guess you and Brett need to get in the octagon ring and splash it out to see who will rise to the top,LOL…
Really though I read yours after Brett’s, so now “THE SON OF ETTORE” is befuddled ! This is something that I need to test when the time comes, but for now I have both of your info !
Your astute in motorcycles and I’m sure you know your stuff… Brett you and the racer get into the OXTAGON and I’ll ref, Oh Yeah…LOL…Just having fun Yawl !

Oh by the way Mr. Hamilton …welcome to the Forum, you might get roughed up but this place is a true school room shaped like an Octagon…LOL
Really though your going to love it here…
That sounds great Yawl send the scrims so I can test them out and the Simpole and them there other poles for me to test and that way I can give them a grade !
Larry…Let’s get into the octagon ring and work out our differences…Oh Yeah ! LOL
Good idea Dan. We’re already getting things started for this year’s MWCC so I’ll see what I can arrange as far as an octagon. It might just be a mud pit.
Reserve 2 front row seats for me!
Seriously, I’d love to head out this July(?), but I’m always so anemic on the help and that’s one of the or THE busiest month of my year.
On the plexiglas subject, I’ve done what I could on a number of these over the years and am eager to hear about these products being cited.
It will likely be the last Saturday in July like last year. So if you’re good and get your work done you can take a mini vacation and get some great networking in.
