a little history , we have been in business 40 + years always always used a good quality chamois. In the last 2 years the quality of the chamois have dropped considerably ,American sponge and chamois was our place to get them but they just don’t last, some don’t even last a week before falling apart leaving crap on the glass.
Any suggestion on a place to get better quality chamois or a replacement for the chamois ?With 40 years into the owner is hard to change whats worked for him
I used a chamois until about 4 years ago, completely agree that the quality is terrible now, I moved onto microfibres and am quite happy with them. Biggest advantage is when the weathers cold, you can use them until they freeze up
Biggest disadvantage is you can’t just wring them out and carry on
Just last week I tried a Scrim for the first time so don’t have enough use to have an opiniion yet, but reviews are good
My favorite so far are the Auto detailing microfibres from HD, Large grey ones with what llooks like a braided weave, about $8 each
Yeah , when it gets wet you get a different one, Thats why I like the big one, it usually lasts all day unless it’s very wet weather or there is lots of detailing to do
we also were trained with chamois.
but like others have stated quality have suffered over the last 15 yrs .
We now use micofibre cloth or used linen tablecloth ( its great try it and cheap ) and alos use the shamwow ripoff (shameze) as a pickup rag
so far so good
cheers
We use the microfiber towels. About the size of a wash cloth. We get them from Supply, we’ve never checked the online store here, which I’m about to do. We’ve also found that they hold soap real well and in cleaning glass, disolves bug stuff and takes it off good. Some of the hard stuff still needs scraping. There are some down sides to it, but the upside far outwieghs the downside.
We’ve liked microfiber cloths and will continue to use them.
That is interesting. Thanks. Where do you get a used linen tablecloth? I am assuming it must be all cotton.
The microfiber cloths I have tried lately carry a lot of static electricity and cling to my hands so I quit using them. I know there are different kinds.
I gave up the chamois about 9 months ago. I’m using the blue hucks and it took about 4 hours to not miss my chamois. When I was buying them I would go into Costco and open about 15 packs until I found the one I liked. It would last about 4-6 months.
We have packing supplies stores here that collect and buy old tablecloth or linen napkins " approx 36"x36" very thin and dry out just like scrim.
Once washed a few times most restuarants get them replaced, so these guys sell them as rags big 20kg bag for $45 Aud .
As for your chamois leaving marks or smears, try washing your chamois out with a dash of vinegar. makes a noticable difference worth a try.
I set out this morning with the idea not to use my Chamois all day .I had 2 30x30 drying microfiber I had bought some while ago to try.About 10 oClock I was so frustrated I went back to the Chamios.
How do you guys keep the towels clean and dry its almost impossible unless im doing it wrong.I didnt pick up any large amounts of water other than detailing the sides.nothing Ive tried has the pick up power of a chamois,Ive been using one for 20 years I guess Im set in my ways a little .Any tips tricks advice would be helpful.
The beauty of the AquaDry (or any PVA towel) is that it works great when it’s damp and as it gets wet you can wring it out and when it gets dirty you can dip it into your bucket and clean it up by rubbing it against itself.
got scrims in friday washed them 3 times before i started them the first day i wasnt impressed but by wed the scrim is all ill ever use from here on out they are amazing
