"Commercial" vs "Storefront/Retail"

I know you guys hate me for saying it, but…
Do yourselves a favor… separate “Commercial” from “Storefront/Retail.”

There is a distinct difference.

Example:

  • a business with product to sell, buy here/pay here,
on site (cars/used cars/food/product) for immediate consumption.
  • And the property owner who wants his entrance way sidewalk of his office building, to look clean for his lessees.

One has an inventory/shop that has to look good, out of necessity, in order to move product.
The other wants his tenants to feel good about entering a clean work environment.

If this came from a book…
about 20% of you would plagiarize this, claiming it as your own.

But since it’s not, I’ll throw out there the second most plagiarized topic…
“Know your customer.”

I would “like” this but I can’t

I have to agree, after 12 years as a commercial window cleaner The only time I ever did shop front glass was if I made a mess of it while cleaning higher.

The boss had route guys that did all that.

They are 2 completely different markets with totally different marketing strategies.

This! ^

Maybe you could use an emoji… We will know what you mean if you drop one of these:

I think people are more visual these days

storefront

Usually just leases the inside of his space . Not in charge of side walks of parking lot. And you usually just Clean the front windows , maybe 2 sides if it’s corner unit.

Commercial

Free standing building , tenant is the only one occupying the lot/land and is charge of maintaining the building and property clean.

My accounting method lists any account I have as commercial or residential. Some States, of which Florida used to be one, forced me to collects sales taxes from all commercial accounts and not for residential accounts. As an accounting professional who has dealt with local, State, and can represent taxpayers before the IRS under Circular 230, (Enrolled Agent) try to list accounts as residential, commercial and storefronts will confuse the bureaucrats and draw extra attention and scrutiny to your tax returns

I ain’t asking you to change your life, and certainly not disregard your “Accounting Professional” status.
I’m just saying, keep it in mind, even if it’s an Excel sheet or a bar napkin.

Here’s my numbers… I was late to the “storefront” thing, so… I won’t go back TOO far.

I’m using June since it’s closed and 7/2015 is still technically ongoing.

2012
Commercial 14%
Storefront/Retail 10%

2013
Commercial 20%
Storefront/Retail 16%

2014
Commercial 18%
Storefront/Retail 19%

2015
Commercial 38%
Storefront/Retail 12%

I’m not getting too excited about the increases (or small decreases,) that’s natural.
What I’m watching is the specific move I made in May of this year, that increased Commercial to 38%

  • lets take the high point for grace/fairness (2013) - it’s almost double.
  • nevermind the low number, I’ll resign that might be fluky stuff, but.

My point is…
See the difference
Know the difference
Exploit the difference.

But, what do I KNOW?!? :o

here’s my numbers

2012
commercial 0%
storefront 0%

2013
… well it’s pretty much like 2012 right up until this moment.

but if i had that kind of work i would definitely break it down like you, J. and i would prolly try to have a specific crew for the storefront stuff. it’s such a different mindset cranking out storefronts that i think it would pay off having a guy or two that ONLY did that kind of work.

but what do I KNOW?

Commercial 95%

Residential 4%

Storefront %1

That’s a real nice way of differentiating.

Hell of a good thread… I’m going to keep this in my fridge so when I’m fresh out of posting ideas I can slither in like snakeydave and plagiarize this…

I am going to repeat my earlier assertion that some of you are working too hard making life more complicated than it has to be

Good thing capitalism is a part of our mainstream society… Otherwise, you would make nothing…
