You might be right about that, But that definitely isn’t the reason why most business owners use them . I use one just because I want all my checks, business mail, separate from my personal mail. My PO box is in the area where most of my route work is , So I can just go there an get my stuff during the day . As for google places I use a different address Not my home don’t want people to find me:p . Run its Debbie downer

Yes if yur dealing with a shady person that hasn’t done anything for you are giving you anything yet . I wouldn’t mail a check either to a PO box .
This is exactly why I asked the question. I don’t care if I breathe the same air or fill up at the same gas station. I care about confusing customers or even accidentally giving business to my competitor. I probably should have been more concise when I posted the question.

Seriously? So what about someone who doesn’t live on a carrier route- they have to have a PO box- there’s no other way for them to receive mail. Should Every owner-operator rent commercial office space so that They have a “legitimate” mailing address?
Personally, I use my home mailing address for the business, because all the boxes are at the end of the street. But if I had mail come to my door, I’d definitely be getting a PO box. I don’t want everyone to know where I live. And my situation certainly doesn’t warrant a dedicated office somewhere (yet, anyway).
There are a lot more accurate and concerning indicators of “shady business” than the use of a PO Box (IMHO)
