First off, did you guys install your truck mounted ladder rack yourself, or did you have someone do it for you? If so, who did it for you? Secondly, I have a GMC Sierra full size pickup. Any of you have any suggestions on a ladder rack. I don’t need the most expensive thing around, but just a good functional rack would be nice.
For my backup vehicle, I installed a Yakima Outdoorsman 300 fullsize rack myself – it’s basically a quick-release system (front and rear uprights with crossbars and ladder stop attachments.
I weld mine together from metal stock. I can’t afford to buy things I can build myself. Besides, when I have to be in the shop building or wrenching on something, I get to visit the beer fridge…I estimate how long it will take by how many beers I will consume…Change the oil and bleed the brakes on the F4i, that’s a 3 beer task…
Come here and build me a rack for my trailer. I hate having ladders on the truck now lol. Actually I’m going to be asking one of the guys from the base truck repair shop to make me one for some trade.
On to the question. I have a cap on my truck so I bought a Thule system. But yes I installed it myself. Most of these types of things come with instructions and that’s all the install shop does. They open the box and read them. Those guys only toss the instructions and fly through installs with things they have done multiple times. If you have a saturday free, do it yourself. Cause you are going to pay for the install. The place I bought mine from wanted to charge me $250.00 for the install plus the $400 for the system. Once I installed it, the first thing I thought to myself was how ****ed I would be looking at this thing knowing I could have done it myself and paid. This does not seem like a tough install and this place is not too bad on the prices.
my van already had one installed when i bought it, has 1 of those arms that pull out and lowers one of the ladders from the roof…makes it easier for someone like me whos a littler shorter than prob most of you guys.
My peugeot came with 2 roof bars already on it.these have been simple and good . i usually leave my big ladder on it ,my main ladder is inside my van on a thin slatted wooden sledge . both are triples
Of course! Plus the me and my children time I get to spend in the shop building something or wrenching on one of my motorcycles or antique hot rods is much more therapeutic. After all, working with metal means I get to cut, hammer and put a torch to it…Life is Good!!
