Different glass, different channel?

Hey everyone,

I have read a bunch of search results and I still have a couple of questions.

First, is there a big difference in the glass itself, between residential and commercial. I’m talking about the part we deal w/, the surface, smoothness and or actual flatness. Is flatness a word?

I do mostly residential. I use all ettore stainless channel, with the 16" being what I use most. There are times when using a bigger channel would help, big picture windows, window walls in A frame houses, etc. I have an 18" stainless ettore channel. But it seems like every other time I go to use it, it doesn’t work well, usually missing badly in the middle. Changing rubbers helps sometimes, sometimes not.

From the information I have gathered here, I think it might be two things, poor quality glass, and I am using the wrong channel.

Last night I finally figured out part of why the Slayer channel and its predecessor are so popular. I only saw a couple of posts that mentioned moving the rubber up and down in the channel. And I didn’t actually grasp what they were talking about until I took another look at the cross section of the channels. I am assuming that this gives you the ability to change the the effective stiffness and angle of attack of the rubber.

I realize these are popular channels. I would love to hear a little more technical explanation about the how and why of these channels. If a different channel can help me do my job more efficiently, I will use it.

Thanks again for all the help,

The biggest thing you are dealing w/ is that on IG units the surface can be anything but flat. Many times there can be a concave surface and a larger channel will leave small puddles of solution on the surface . It’s one of the reasons I use a 12" and 16" channel for residential. Just use small channels on resi and save the bigger ones for large commercial glass.

Used my Sorbo Quicksilver today and was reminded why these thicker channels are the shizzle. I find I hardly have to press at all and the channel just glides incredibly. Not to mention the water flows out of the channel much quicker than with a reg Ettore stainless. I have had that happen where even a 14inch leaves a puddle in the middle of my stroke. That doesnt sound too good if you take it out of context  Glasss definitely varies from house to house or store to store. I have been taking mental notes on types of windows and figuring out what methods, channels , ammont of pressure works for each type.I personally dont like moving the rubber higher up in the channel, just my preference. All just a learning experience. Just finished about two hours ago doing frickin mini-blinds all day plus a bunch of disgusting windows. I hope tomorrow brings mercy!

Wow!!! Guess u backed in too something of time saveing !! But there’s more too it !! Then try it with a swivel ledger !!you will have to change the way you do things !! Get the dvd. How did you do the blinds ? Machine?? Stan

I dont really understand what youre talking about. I did the blinds with a telescoping brush. Laid them out on the drive way on astro turf. Then hang them to air dry. What dvd are you referring to??
