Do you charge extra if there are removable grills?

such as on the inside of windows - fake cut ups.

No.

Forsure. More work equals more money.

No

Funny enough haven’t thought of that… but no. I charge an arm and a leg though when they are real french squares!!

+1

In addition, they can be very fragile (i.e. chance of broken or loose clips, grids falling apart, increased reinstall time, etc.)

no

Yeah, I do…but not much really, I will just add 20 bucks. It only takes a few minutes to remove them and put em back on.

sure do. $1 per grid. As Larry said they are fragile. Also look to see how they are fastened in. I had one home they were nailed into place…a pita for sure.

Do you guys offer the homeowner the option to remove and replace the grids themselves?

If they snap in using the little nubby clips, then no, if they’re the peg types, yes. I hate the peg ones.

I have one customer who volunteered to remove and replace prior to my first service some years ago, and continues to do so.

I prefer that the homeowner handles the removable grids, in the same manner as moving fragile items from window sills prior to service.

Several years ago, I had a West-facing wooden grid come apart upon removal. Many of the snap-in clips also pulled from the frame, so I became wary…

No I dont. Reason being is that it makes it easier for me to clean the glass. Why would I charge for something that makes my job easier than a true divided lite? Before anyone on here blasts my post, I will tell you that my main competitor charges to remove them and we hear the complaints of how much they charge in addition to window cleaning. Sometimes they are 50.00 to 75.00 more on quotes just because of the grill removal upcharge. I hear this complaint from just about every former customer of theirs. I would try to find out if your competition is charging or not. It may mean the difference in landing the job or over bidding it. I will also add that my competitor’s former clients are really appreciative of us removing them and replacing them. 75% of their former customers removed them prior and reinstalled them when they were done to save on the price. I dont like putting my customers to work when im doing their home. Thats just my way of doing things.

Cool.

We’re not charging them to clean windows. We’re charging them for our time. ~Jeff Klass (paraphrase)

I am aware of that saying “time is money”. I can count on one hand how many times I cussed at a grid in my twenty years doing windows. Grids suck dont get me wrong. But you also have to keep in mind that you may bid yourself out of a job which my competitor has done and is continuing to do over and over and over.

“I am charging them to clean their windows which takes time. I am not charging for all the little things that are part of my companies cleaning duties”. Steve (AKA Winderwarsher)

I charge 25 cents for normal sized grills, a little more, maybe 50 cents or more for huge ones on palladium windows.

As part of your one-price quote, or as a separate line item?

Good point.

I do not charge to remove them. In most cases I have found when you start to nickle and dime your customers for every little thing you wont have many customers. Best off to charge a higher price in the window cleaning itself. Then when the home does not have grids you are still charging your same price to clean the window and make more of a profit. But I just got done a few hours ago with a huge home that was supposed to be a back of the house only gig. Well at the end of the day, when they saw how great the windows looked they wanted the rest of the home done. But the entire home had these grids. The job was so large too two days and you can bet I was thinking about charging for them. But when a customer is paying $3000 they don’t want to hear they are going to be charged for the grids. Heck when I gave them my screen price they decided to not have them cleaned. .
