Suddenly Phil’s videos weren’t so bad.
The job is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay.
The trick to charging residential is to show them the value & benefits of your company. Your personality can steer them into “wanting” to hire you. I’m not talking about smooth talking or ripping somebody off like a used car salesman… it’s just that some people have the knack of making people feel comfortable.
I agree with Micah. I used to do all my own sales up until recently. I always focused on the “technical” aspect of selling to people (probably so much time spent in the field, and as all of us do, I take a lot of pride in quality) I recently hired an experienced salesman who taught me a very great lesson about selling. “They wont CARE what you KNOW, until they KNOW that you CARE” I think all too often we take so much pride in our work that it becomes our complete focus when selling. “I wipe out the sills, I scrape everything, I clean the screens thoroughly, other companies do not guarantee this blah blah blah” Who cares? Your quality will shine through and build your reputation. It’s character that people buy, even if they don’t know that they do, and you can’t produce that.
Example : I bought my first truck from one company… the guy was alright but kind of a flake… just sort of gave me the wrong impression. Great price, great truck, great quality. I found myself shopping around at all the other bigger dealerships for my next vehicle even though they are higher mark up just because I realized that I don’t like the owner of the first company. Keep that in mind when selling, and remember… You have to charge your friends, because your enemies wont buy from you. People buy from those they like.
I have a customer that bought from me and hated it. He was on the Nce tour and told the story. I wore him down because I wanted his business. The company is one of the largest I have to this day.
I get what your saying and I agree. It just doesn’t apply to me.

When I was first looking into window cleaning as a business, I found Don on you tube. He was very instrumental in motivating me. When he went off you tube I found WCR. I admit that WCR is far more professional and informative, but Don still was the one who made believe I could make a living doing this. I’m glad he is back. Maybe he will raise his prices with the times, maybe not. That’s the beauty of being your own boss. You can charge what you want. Welcome back Don.
I have seen this guy a few times on youtube. He has some good points. I just wish he would keep politics out of it. He says something political every time. Keep it at home.
i was exactly the same, Dons vids made me think i wasnt wasting my time when i first started cleaning windows.
It’s very difficult to raise your prices after starting out as a low baller. That’s one of the downfalls of starting out, you charge cheap just to get the job & when you want to raise your prices the client knocks you back. If you could do it for that price before, why not now? That’s why it’s very important to set a price point as a business & not as an employee.
