Downspout clearing

Hey guys,

I’ve got a gutter cleaning and downspout clearing job next week, the house is 2 stories, downspouts are stuffed… how do you guys clear the downspouts, stuff the waterhose in there or does something else work better for you?

I start with this tool I made from parts I got at the local hardware store. I have used it for 6-7 years so it looks a little beat up. I think it cost me $20-$30 in parts. Notice that there is a shutoff on one end and an adjustable nozzle on the other. If this by itself does not work I add a 3 foot sink drain snake from the top and work it around (95% of clogs are near the top). If that does not work I tap the downspout with a white rubber mallet (black will leave marks). Also check the bottom of spout and make sure it is not buried in the dirt. If after doing all these things and keeping the water running for 5-10 minutes I take the downspout off the house and reverse flush the downspout. Hopefully you will never have to do this with a 2 story downspout full of water. It gets real messy and you can bend the downspout if it is full of water.

I actually use a toilet bowl snake. works great on clogged elbows…just have to make sure they are screwed in.Then we flush with water.

I carry a garden hose with the male connector end cut off. That way I can snake it through bends pretty easy. with the metal end on, you cannot get past the first bend.

How do you unclogg a downspout if it is connected to a pipe into the ground?
