Ecover Gets too Much Hype

While I do think Ecover is a good soap, I really do not find it to be any better than 7th Generation “Free and Clear”

They are both similar in chemistry and if anything, 7th Gen is composed of higher quality ingredients (see their website); not to mention, it has no fragrance or additional aesthetic components - making it a perfect soap for window cleaning, where add-ons can create unnecessary films and buildup.

Also,

Dange, if you are out there, you said on one of your videos a while ago that you may go back to TSP. I was curious what your choice was and if in fact you stayed with Ecover…

Has anyone tried 7th generation free and clear?

Why don’t we all just use soap made for windows, or stick with the old school Joy or Dawn? JMO

I mix my own. I am so glad to not be a part of these soap wars. This is like the “my oil is better than your oil” battles I see on the motorcycle forums I frequent

Its not much of a war from my end. More curiosity as to the excitement over Ecover, when similar products have existed much before its release.

I will say again that I think saying that one soap/cleaner will handle every window cleaning need is fanciful. I have at any given time four different solutions and half a dozen additives to add to the mix for what ever the conditions may be.
It is all good, everybody is right and it is all for the most part perception, even mine.
Dale.

I’m with Dale, I use different cleaning solutions for different soiling conditions, types of glass etc. It’s weird, but different glass glides differently depending if it is hydrophobic or hydrophilic etc Glass that has sealant on it “behaves” different. Plus, there is the stuff stuck to the glass, and even the temperature and humidity that plays a factor. I’m not saying you need to be excessively scientific about everything, but if you have a few different solutions up your sleeve, it can be an intuitive thing where after awhile, you will say, “oh, it’s one of these kind of jobs, I will need to use xyz.” Ecover is great in that it leaves very little residue, but it doesn’t break up the tough stuff as well IMO. For instance it doesn’t break down fingerprints very well. I love it for not very dirty interior glass. Grease, smoke residue, baked on stuff, and I’m grabbing my TSP.

Ecover sales @ WCR are slightly down recently. Folks seem to be slowly switching back.

Honestly I like it for a few reasons 1 sales being Eco friendly 2 it works and have never had any issues 3 it cuts spider crap finger prints grease and tape adhesive. But all I have to say is TO EACH THEIR OWN! Not everyone is gonna love what other people use stick with what works for you plan and simple my friends

I bought a bottle of Dawn last week

I never tried ecover. I haven’t seen it available in any stores around me. Wasn’t going to order dish soap online either.

I tried Ecover recently and will probably keep using it. I tried seventh generation and it did not have enough ‘slip’ for me. I mostly like it because it has the term ‘Eco’ on the bottle. A lot of my choices as to how I run my business have to do with how much impact I have on the environment. And even if the amount impact I have is insignificant, it still makes me feel better to have tried.

I do have a problem right now finding the correct mix for my spray bottle. I used to just put a couple drops of dawn mixed with a little bit of isopropyl for my greasy restaurants and a few homes with prairie grids. The mix is different with Ecover and I haven’t found the perfect amount yet. Otherwise I like it, and in some cases it works better than Dawn.

apart from the really good glass cleaning or reduced smearing that Ecover gives in direct sunlight…the major question here is and also taking into account dawn has most probably got petro chemicals in in it …of all the the glass cleaners… which one is going to effect my health after dipping my hands in it / or taking in the vapors for 20 years ??? GG4 has a real strong potent smell ( it dont smell healthy to me … so especially after using it all day one should think about it ) and dawn most possibly is the un healthiest of the dish soaps…this something people should think about seriously . we have one life and one body so a little thought should go into it.

I am not going to state facts about which is healthiest . but each year in GErmany we are made aware that certain chemicals can cause cancer especially when used with bare hands and breathed in… Food for thought !

I agree completely with you; however, I would like to see the chemistry behind their soap. Just because its called Ecover, doesnt mean that it is healthy for us to use, it simply means its environmental impact is lesser (ie It may suds less than dawn, but that doesn’t mean it is healthier than dawn).

I would like to know what is in it. Seventh Generation Soap, for example, is a company dedicated to producing products that use chemistry and safety to provide incredibly organic cleaning solutions to the user.

Im not heated about this, just curious to know everyone’s thoughts and as I said I would like to see the ingredients. The term “surfactants” can mean a very large host of things, most of which are synthetic and unhealthy.

I like using GG4 and Ecover together nowadays. In a 1.25liter pressure sprayer I add a cap full of GG4 and 2 very small drops of Ecover. It gives next to no suds but has much more slip than GG4 on its own. The reason I use Ecover for the slip over other dish soaps is cuz Ecover never leaves smears or streaks whereas others do, in my experience.

i use wat ever works the best at an affordable price…Ive seen some of these solutions out here for sale at way too much then what i am willing to spend

I too have settled into a GG4/Ecover mix for optimum performance.

I bought a case of ecover when we first started talking about it. I love it and will keep using it. I had a bottle of gg4 lying around, so I started mixing it mainly to use it up. The mix works great. I can’t say for sure if it’s better but I think I am going to continue the mix till I find something better.

I have used GG3/GG4, Dawn, Joy, Ivory, Squeegee Off, 7th Generation, and Ecover. So far for me anyway Ecover wins. However, I am going to try the GG4/Ecover mix now that there is some positive feedback. Plus, I like the idea of telling my clients that my soap is a mixture of products.

Howdy,

Say, I haven’t turn back to TSP…I’m still using my Ecover. The stuff is sweet ,leaving minimal residue if any, plenty of glide, great grease cutter and a little bit goes a long way.

Still soap is soap and it all works !

I actually use TSP to wash my work cloths with, works really great in getting the dirt out !

You wash your work clothes, Dange?
