EIN number?

If I’m starting my business as a sole proprietorship do I still need an EIN number??

You need an einbefore you get employees. You can get it later when you do start hiring. Any ppw ( in Arizona) where it asks for your ein you can just plug in your ssn.

Thanks!

I think you could. Get away with just a social security #. On a W-9.

I think not 100% on that one

If you end up getting employees you will need an EIN and if your accounts at banks and insurance are already set up with your SSN then they will probably need to be converted and your accounts could be at the mercy of the data conversion process.

Even if you never want employees I would be reluctant to use my SSN due to the ease of identity theft in our electronic media.

I just put down my social on w9s. Why would I need an employer identification number if I’m not an employer?

It is easy to do, Just get it and be done with it.

You need it for your w-9 and when you get insurance etc

When I got my DBA (doing business as) with the city they wanted either my SS # or EIN. It is rare that I ever give out my SS #.

People on here spew crap like it’s a bona fide fact. Let’s try this. When there are no clouds and it’s daytime the sky is blue. ?

Who’s this directed at?

The crap spewers.

As a sole proprietor without employees you do not have to have an ein and your ssn will suffice for filling out W9s. I would recommend organizing as a LLC and in such case you must get an ein. It should be noted that formation of a LLC is at the state level and an ein is issued from the IRS.

For my 1st 3 years I used my SSN on W-9s and had no issues. Some clients were even slow to switch to my EIN in their systems. But going LLC/S-Corp has been a big tax saver for me.
