How close to the edge can you get w/ your system? Also how long do you think it would take to remove a 6 inch long 1/4 inch deep scratch?

With the GlassRenu Scratch Removal System you can get right up the the frame on any pane of glass. For a 1/4" scratch that is 6" long, would probably take 45 minutes to remove since that is a pretty extensive scratch. The results would come out distortion free as well :D.

One thing to know about the GlassRenu System is that is ships out with just around 500 sq. ft. of repairable material and the disks come in an array of sizes ranging in a 3" size, 5", 6" and 8" size for the use on large areas of damage. The 3" is great to get up to the corners with.

I hope this was able to answer your question:).

Thanks Cole!

Hi Cole, I have a question about distortion free. If you have a deep scratch 6" long, in a piece of plate glass, you have to remove the glass srface all the way down to the deepest part and then polish it out. That’s a no brainer. Aren’t you creating a thinner area compared to the rest of the glass thickness and won’'t it be distorted? I’m sure you have to fan out from the scatch to blend it, but distortion free?
Is there a web site to see this in action to some degree?

Yes you are correct. We are removing some of the surface of the glass to get down to the bottom of the damage. What we do with our system is feather out the ground area and create such a wide optical lens that there is no visible distortion when looking through the glass. Technically speaking we are “thinning” out the glass in the area we are doing the repair. Many would think that that would be weakening the glass but really the weak point is the scratch in it. By eliminating the scratch and making the glass one smooth surface again, we are strengthening it.
But to make sure I am answering your question properly, we are feathering the glass out to where you can not see any trace-mark of a repair occurring and the light will pass through the same as the un-repaired area of the glass. You can see all of our demo videos on our website at Glass Scratch Removal System - GlassRenu. When looking at the acid-etch removal demo, I will let you in on a little secret. Secret being that the counter time on the video is just around the same time it took to complete that repair. We also have many before and after pictures of repairs on the site as well. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thank you for your support!

I would like to clarify as I was just going over my 2 post on this thread. Most residential glass is 1/4" thick or less, and when I read over the question I had mistaken it for .025" rather than .25" (I’m used to working in decimals). A 6" long scratch that is .025" deep is going to take around 45 minutes to complete the repair.

For a frame of reference, a scratch that is .004" is when you are going to be able to catch your fingernail on the damage. A scratch that is .015" deep is going to begin chipping along the scratches edge, and a scratch depth of .025" or greater can be considered heavy damage.

I didn’t convert my decimals to fractions very well. Good catch. I meant .025. Thanks for catching that Cole.:o

No problem! Are you offering glass scratch removal right now?

What about water stains ?? How fast ??? Marketing scratch removeal and water stain remove ?? Most of my people just replace it with ins !!! Penny wise and dollar dumb !!! Or just do nothing !! I’ve looked at your system for a couple of years and just can’t see how to make it pay for it’s self !! Yes there’s lot of work out there but not willing to pay at any price !! Stan, pro window kleening for 26 years and proud sorbo user

Yes the system works GREAT for hard water stains. It is a very easy type of damage to remove. I normally consider hard water stains to be minor damage to glass as it does not take that long to remove. I have done everything from using our polishing pad along with our polishing solution to remove it without even having to get into any abrasives. I have also taken on hard water stains and mineral deposits that were so bad that I needed to attack it with our more aggressive RenuDisk just to knock off all the deposits that have built on the glass for years. I have had a number of users who have worked on car wash station windows that have had soap scum build-up for 5 years to where you could not see through the windows, it was that bad. They had gone in using our most aggressive RenuDisk to remove the soap scum build up, then jumped to our pre-polishing disk, just to polish it out back to clarity.
Some great easy ways to market Scratch Removal and Hard Water Stain Removal is to talk with some of your clients and ask them if they would like to save money on replacing the window, since glass restoration will save them a fraction of the replacement cost. Other great marketing techinques is to use sites like google and craigslist to let people in your local area know that you are providing this service. I have found that the word of mouth that follows this service is huge. Customers are so excited that you can repair their glass and save them money that they will often go out and tell others that they know that they do not have to live with damaged glass anymore.
There are so many places around the world that have bad water quality running to their homes through sprinkler systems, showers, or building run off that a majority of the glass is going to be hard water stained or have some type of unwanted damage on it in sometime portion of its lifetime. The GlassRenu System will also open you up to doing graffiti removal jobs whether it is scratch tag graffiti or acid-etch graffiti. You can also go after markets like post-construction clean up. The need for glass restoration is endless and I feel like window cleaners already have their foot in the door. You clean the window, you see the damage, now you can add the extra service saving your customers from replacing the glass and keeping money in their pocket, while placing money in your pocket as well. Plus, if the problem ever occurs again, they know who to call.

Funny, I saw a guy this morning using this very system on a storefront. I stopped and watched him for a minute as I was driving by. My thought was, “wow this guy is just using a Makita and a pad and trying to remove scratches”.

After I saw this post and watched the videos I realize this was your system by the bottles and pads in the picture. Looks like a super nice system, maybe some day in the future for me…

Not yet. I am however considering a system for silica based hard water stain removal and scratches.

So tony is that a iowa thing on silica based tds ?? Or something else ??

No Stan. I’m not talking TDS. I’m talking about the different minerals that make up hard water stains on glass. They can be calcium, magnesium, rust, silica, etc.
If there are silica stains present you have to remove them w/ an acid that dissolves glass ( the glass we clean is between 72 and 75% silica) or a scratch removal system because they bond to the glass after enough time. The only acid I know of that can remove well bonded silica is hydrofluoric and it can cause Tin Etch Haze and be dangerous to your health. A scratch removal system solves both issues.

I am going to have to agree with Tony on that one! The GlassRenu Scratch Removal System will allow you to not have to worry about what type of hard water stain it is. It allows you to focus more on getting the damage off the glass, rather than figuring out what the best solution is going to be. Especially for the hard water stains that have not been treated for long periods of time.

My question to all is this… What is the worst type of damage you have seen on glass? Was is a graffiti tag? acid-etching? hardwater where you could not even see through the glass anymore? or was there a chunk of glass missing from the pane?

I have seen some bad damage in my lifetime, but I know that there is worse! Can anyone tell me what the damage was and how it may have been created?

'_D

I’ve seen some scratches that were pretty deep. But the worst looking glass I’ve ever seen was so hammered by hard water that you’d have sworn it was frosted glass.

Haha! That is great! I love seeing windows like that. I just actually did a job a few months back with hard water stains. This hard water was so bad that the people who worked inside the bank could not even see outside the building. I felt kinda bad for them for a while there cause they would come in when the sun was rising, and left work when the sun was down. Not being able to see a lick of sunlight made me truly appreciate this California weather!
