I always get slow in August and have decided to do some door to door sales. Anyone have any advice? Kind of nervous about soliciting door to door because I personally get annoyed by solicitors coming to my door selling anything. Anyone have a any good sales pitches or other advice? Thanks
i would consider splitting you time up between resi and commercial buildings. door knocking, like any sales, can be exhausting. unsolicited proposals can be a great way to generate big jobs in the slow season.
Do you have any type of marketing budget set aside? a strong piece of literature can go a long way in any sales pitch.
street bidder is also an idea. test out an area and see what comes back.
I guess my best advice is dont only focus on one thing, like knocking resi doors. If you have time to do in the field sales, you wanna spread your time out.
Take a day or 2 and try a couple different things, then build off what is working and ditch what is not.
Are you talking Door to Door Marketing or Sales , Storefronts or Homes?
Dave what kind of “ROI” do you look for with your Marketing budget?
Totally depends on what it’s being spent on and what time of the year it is. A lot of the time, in the beginning of any advertising campaign, be it a local newspaper add or an eddm campaign, I’m happy with a break even.
Anything that has a large outbound target, like a coupon deal through Angie’s list or a mailing campaign supplemented by flyers, the return can be so long term that I really don’t obsess with the upfront roi, but more how many touches we got per dollar spent.
Hopefully that makes sense… Let me know if you want me to elaborate more
download street bidder
Yeah it made since in regard to not obsessing on the upfront roi.
I was looking for more of an answer to what your over all goal was for your roi with your marketing campaign on a yearly basis if you know what I mean.
What kind of percentage per dollar for example (10%-30% ect.)?
I understand you do multiple services and each one fluctuates depending on season…But you must have a “ROI” goal yearly.
If you haven’t already, check and see if you need a permit…
over all, if I spend a buck, I like to get $2 back. Because our marketing is so spread out, the few things I try that really work end up evening out the stuff that does not work so well.
Eddm I’m happy with break even
Flyering I’m happy with break even
local ads and Internet stuff is where I get picky
I also spend money on promo stuff to give customers. Return on that stuff is priceless, but hard to gauge.
One of my greatest roi return is stamps. Mailing tri folds and services letters is very inexpensive and extremely successful with a good follow up program
Thank Dave for giving us a little bit of insight into your marketing process.
The biggest problem I remember having when resi door to door, was trying to time it when the people were home. It limited my prime time to saturday and after 5PM on the weekdays. I struggled with leaving a card, then door hangers for the people not home. Street Bidder is a perfect tool to use for mixing it up. Face to face imo sells the best, at least for me (I like to talk & very good at reading people) - I don’t see myself doing much door to door in the future, but for you guys that are, I’d say street bid the people that aren’t home. You’ll have plenty, trust me.
