Gutter sealing

For those of you that service gutters, what do you use or feel is the best to seal gutters at the joints. I have a customer that wants me to re-seal all the joints on his gutters. Outdoor Sliicone? or Special stuff?

We use the outdoor silicone. Seems to do the trick. There are also gutter patches you can get.

Dave,
We use Seamer Mate found at Home Depot. When I first started using it it was VERY FRUSTRATING!!! The stuff is silver in color (I tell my customers that it is like liquid soldier). The stuff will want to stick to about everthing imaginable except a gutter joint it seems.

It is a great product and will spread out evenly when it gets exposed to the hot temps that summer brings. The key to applying it is to:

  1. Get the area as clean as possible.
  2. Squeeze out the amount that will cover the joint .
HOT TIP: 3. Take a towel, (I use a huck surgical) get it wet, wring it as dry as possible. Put your index finger into the towel and use the tip to push the seam sealant into place. It works like a charm. The seamer mate wont stick to a wet surgical towel. I can seam a joint in about 2 minutes.

When I first added seam sealing to my business, I checked on a few roofing/gutter installation forums and everyone told me to just deal with it.

last year I did a seam sealing job that took about 1.25 hours and 3 tubes of seamer mate(Under $20.00 in material). The job was for $350.00. easy work with an awesome profit margin!

you use the seal on the inside of the gutter right?

I use butyl caulking on all my gutter joints. It stays flexible in extreme cold and does a great job.

yes

just checking

Tony,

You get it at Home depot type places? I am not sure what state winderwasher is from…but I know your weather is right up there with ours(31 inches the other day). I need something that works with our seasons.

Dave,
I try to avoid making repairs on seams until the weather is at least 50 degrees out. They do make seam sealer that can be used in different climates. A local supplier here has it. I will give them a call tomorrow to see if I can get a product/manufacturer’s name for you.

Steve

Steve,

I wont be doing it till the spring, when it is at least 50 degrees but was wondering if the stuff you use from home depot is good for all climates after its applied.

Yes it holds up well in all climates after it is applied. I thought you were talking about applying it when it was cold:).

I did a seach and found the name of the stuff that a few gutter installation companies told me to use. They said it was hands down the best and easy to work with. The company is called Ruscoe and their site is here: The Rucsoe Company Construction Materials

I have about 4 cases of the Home Depot seamer mate stuff still left. Im going to try Ruscoe when I run out.

Steve

10-4, thank you…I will look into that too

We stay away from that type of repair like that. We might do something like that when we are cleaning for free but there is no Guaranty it is going to work. Does any body Guaranty this type of work?

We guarantee all work 100%. Its not that hard of work as long as the gutter doesnt have pitch issues and is holding water. We also added window caulking and made really great money do that as well. Gutter seaming of leaky joints and caulking around windows is usually on every homeowners to-do list at one time or another. In 2009, I added these two services because I was thinking about what peoplwould be willing to spend their money on (necessity). I found that there are quite a few of my customers that asked for quotes when I broght it up to them.
