Hey Mark, don’t pre-wet the gutters, you’ll get faster results if they’re dry when you apply your chemical.
I usually give them a quick spray along with any area of the house/garden that I don’t want to get damaged.
As for the gutters next time, I might give your tip a go and see what happens. Thanks
As you described – for single-story buildings I spray 10-12’ working sections, allow to dwell, then scrub and rinse. Prior to rinse, I spray the next section, allowing it to dwell (not dry) while I rinse the preceding section.
For 2-story buildings, I spray onto the brush. I find that over-applying, if you will, provides a better result with less time spent )multiple applications are sometimes needed.) Ground level work is more noticable to the homeowner as well…
have a 2 story gutter cleaning tomorrow (in/out) and I want to know if anyone that uses F-13 has ever added some sort of surfactant to the mix, like dish washing soap or simple cherry.
I might try that tomorrow and see what happens if I don’t get any answer before I leave for work. Is gonna be really hot tomorrow, and I hate 2 stories on hot days, everything dries almost immediately.
Yeah use some if simple cherry you have some on hand, it will help. If you don’t have any simple cherry you can use just a little of dawn, but simple cherry would be ideal. Simple cherry has some water “wetters” to keep the water from drying out, a lot like Glass Gleam 3 does. I wouldn’t mix GG3 with f-13 though…
Also, go buy some of the cheap nozzle that only have like a “0” degree spray pattern. These are usually made of metal, last a long time, and have a ball valve. These work great for spraying up to 2 stories. You can lightly mist the gutters to keep them from drying out when you have chemical on them as well.
The nozzles work really well for clearing the shingle grit out of the gutters too.
Thanks Micah. I was looking for a 1/4 hose barb to fit on a regular garden hose but couldn’t find at home depot and I’ll take my goodyear nozzle which has a long reach.
I also modified my Xtel pole using the reach Around and an Unger flow-through brush, with fan jets so I can connect it to the garden hose and scrub+rinse with the same pole and without making a mess with the windows, which I have to clean later.
Does F-13 stains on the glass are hard to remove ? Haven’t paid attention to that on previous jobs, so I assume they’re not.
Hey guys,Is gutter whitening more profitable than window cleaning or is it about the same?
I’m thinking on skipping gutters completely, just got from a house we did today, awfully tired, we ended up a little below $100/hr.
I’m not complaining, and not being a pssy either, but with the windows I get more money and work less. Gutters are labor intensive, and you cannot really get what you get for the windows, you can but people won’t pay it. But I think the problem is the heat, is not the same working on around 75+ in October than on a heat that feels like 110+ right now here in Houston.
I always say the same thing “gutters no more” but keep doing it just in case things are slow and is one more thing to do.
Are you talking about cleaning out gutters or whitening…or both?
As for me I hate cleaning out gutters and pass on most jobs lately but gutter whitening is a breeze.
In Toronto, most homes have eaves full of Black Soup (Black water and shingle gravel). Plus, as you say, many don’t want to pay what the job is worth. Too many young kids and start-ups doing the work for next to nothing.
Yeah I don’t clean out the inside of gutters anymore, unless it’s just a small amount, or flushing the shingle grit out.
The problem is that stuff is moldy, and can bother your allergies. Then you have the heat coming off the roof. And there’s not really a great way of doing it except climbing a ladder and scooping it out by hand.
Now gutter whitening is another story. Great money in it and it’s easy to do.
I mean both services, maybe I don’t have the right equipment and still I believe I do.
Waving a long extension pole with a brush and having to lower the brush to apply chemical and up again … too much.
I might start being more selective, 1 story houses are a piece of cake most of the time, but 2 stories with tens of different elevations, using a 20ft pole it sure wears you down really quick, and if you add up the intense heat, is a recipe for quitting
A little bit of practice helps, along with the right chemical and ratio. You really don’t need to scrub with the brush, the brush is just a means of applying the chemical. I just let the weight of the pole and brush rest against the gutter and walk.
Oh, and you can do stuff to have fun while you’re working too…
Anybody who wants to use that picture for marketing… feel free!
I might be doing something wrong, or the electrostatic bonding here is much stronger that there
I’ll try that next time Micah and see what happens, maybe my F-13 is getting weak, but Bob told me that unless it freezes you’re fine, there’s no shelf-life for it.
Yesterday I started with around F-13 at 1 part to 4 of water and it took some scrubbing, later I went crazy and 1:1 and it helped but had to apply twice and scrub that too. Might order a “fresh” one, 1gallon only at a time maybe, I have a 5’er that I ordered a year ago.
we got a degreaser from our local pw supplier - less expensive, less abrasive, easier to get and works just as good
wanna share the name ?
I just ordered some Gutter Zap today. along w/ a MarXoff applicator from our great friends at WRC.
Looking forward to using it this week and selling it as an add-on service, I’ll be sure to give plenty of feedback along w/ before and after photo’s.
We’ll appreciate that feedback, specially on that applicator - I’m tired of going thru different brushes that I don’t like
Well, I recently tried the “Gutter Zap” on my own home.
It did not take the tiger strips off like they claim it would, may need to strengthen the amount of Zap to water ratio and try it again.
I was however pleased w/ the Marx-off applicator.
Very easy to use w/ pole, formed well to unity of the gutter and definitely held a significant amount
of Gutter Zap solution on the pad.
Do your gutters have a factory paint job or have they been painted since they were installed? I’ve found that if a gutter has any other finish then the original, it’s best to just clean and re-paint.
