I have used a heat gun in the past on commercial tempered glass to remove tint and really old paint with excellent results. My question is, has anyone ever used a heat gun on a residential window to remove tint? I am concerned about possibly melting the frames, or having an issue with the gas in between the two panes. What do you guys think?
Insulated glass heats up quickly retains it’s heat pretty well…that’s what glassrenu has taught me. A test piece, dual pane vinyl-type window, I picked up at a “scrap yard” cracked at about 240 degrees with pressure on it. They suggest you never go above 150 - each pane is different.
That pane cost me $5 to learn a good lesson.
Sounds kinda sketchy…I’d be concerned about frame/trim melting, heating and breaking the glass, catching something on fire, don’t try that in conjunction with Oil Flo…that might get exciting…
Thanks guys. Re-assured my thinking of it being a bad idea. Looks like im in for some good old fashioned scraping!
I haven’t tried tint off, you should, report back ASAP ; )
