HELP, What will work on this awning?

Hi WCR fans, We clean windows not awnings but I said yes to this job because I do their windows and did not want to risk the account.
What is the best way to clean bird droppings off of these canvas awnings, more pressure just makes the canvas bow in. I do not want to use anything to harsh that will discolor or damage them in any way. I took these pics just after an attempt to clean them, it’s not good!
Help me out, please
Matt

You shouldn’t need to use high pressure water to remove these. It could also damage the awning.
What chemical are you using?
Winsol Deep Clean should remove it, you may need to apply it full strength directly to the spots.
Wayne Shockey has a post with pics that shows him doing this.

Hi Matt,

You may want to try “Dirty Bird” by Winsol on the bird droppings on this awning.

Good luck with your project.

DO NOT PRESSURE WASH!

Use regular window cleaning solution. Get a deck scrub brush, wet it, and simply scrub the hell out of it. Pressure will embed the dookie further into the canvas.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the link to the Dirty Bird. Is this safe for the canvas, as in not going to hurt the fabric or discolor it?
It sounds like spray it on with maybe a squeeze bottle and twenty minutes or longer come back and rinse it off with maybe a wet scrubber on a pole?
I am a newbie as you can tell on awnings.
Thanks Again!
Matt

Hi Matt,

I have used “Dirty Bird” on Sunbrella fabric canvas awnings many times. The problem is that not all canvas awnings are made with Sunbrella fabric. Some canvas fabrics are very hard to clean because the fabric is so cheap the color fades off if you apply any brush or scrubber to them. When in doubt, always test the fabric in an inconspicuous place for compatibility. In my area about 80% of the canvas awnings are made with Sunbrella fabric. Sunbrella fabric is great! The other cheap stuff is junk!!!

Here is the web link to Sunbrella’s care and maintenance for awnings with many good suggestions.

Also, be sure to contact Winsol Labs at 800-782-5501 they will be happy to answer any of your questions about “Dirty Bird” or any of their other cleaning products. WCR also carries many of their products.

This is how I clean off bird droppings - I like to rinse the awning with plenty of water, apply your cleaner, brush it in, dwell time, rebrush the awning and rinse with plenty of water. (This may need to be repeated if it’s really badly soiled.)

Best of luck to you,

Wayne
