Hot water vs Cold water PW

Hello everyone,
I am debating which type of Pressure washer I should invest in. My main target for now is residential driveways and sidewalks and also house/ roof cleaning as well. I really like the hot water units bc im assuming they cut through grim and other stuff pretty easy compared to a cold water unit. But with the right type of cold water unit can the same outcome be accomplised? I would be using a service cleaner as well. I would like to spend from $2,000-$3000. Any ideas on where to buy a reliable unit as well would help out a ton. Please all and any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated and would help me go in the right direction!

Thank you all,
Mike

Hot water is great for cutting grease and popping gum on commercial jobs. Some guys use warm water as a sales point for house washes. You’re residential cleaning is really only going to be as effective as the surface temp. My recommendation is to go with a good quality cold unit if residential is your focus.

Go to pressure Tek and look at the 5.6 gallon cold units. Excellent starter point.

2.5 gpm hot or cold will Not work for this type of work you are wanting to do, 5.6 minimum is what you will need.

With that being said, with the 5.5 Gpm would that be able to handle fleet and other commercial jobs especially with grease? All great tips! Thank you.

Hey Mike,

For starters, don’t use a pressure washer on a roof. Buy a dedicated pump (Fatboy) or something else for this. Your gonna have to do some research on what others are doing.

As for residential washing, a cold water unit is all you need. GPM is your friend…but a 5.5 minimum or if you can, buy an 8gpm. You won’t be sorry going bigger.

Concrete can be cleaned well without heat. I’ve done it with heat and without with good results. To pop gum, you will need heat though.

As for a surface cleaner, don’t buy one to large for you pressure washer. This is a start.

Limited grease, like an isolated oil spot or something, you’ll be OK with cold water.

For widespread grease, like a gasoline station or fast food restaurant, you’ll need hot water to be effective and make money.

Now would a hot water unit at 2.5gpm an 2700 psi do a better job cutting wise than a really good cold water unit bc of the hot water? Thank you for the advice this is very helpful!!
