How much do you make after vehicle expenses like gas, insurance, maintenance? How much income tax do you pay on $10/hour? What about general liability insurance? What about after uniforms, business cards, website, yellow page ad, etc???
I think its great that you have booked this account! I agree with the building more business while your there Enviro. Every time you go out there and clean this account make sure you dont drive back home without booking a similar account in that same area. Just let the other potential clients know what you do for this satisfied customer and that you can do the same for them while your there! Always be positive, confident, energetic, professional, organized and just know you will gain one extra account before you drive back home… Before you know it… you will have a full week booked solid and so on and so on… you will find out how easy it really is and you can start doing the same in your area or in other areas where you have this same situation.

That’s what we call it here in the south. You walk up and down the street with your tools and you stop and ask every store you come to if they want their windows cleaned. You are right there and ready. I put a cart together that looked like an ice cream or sno-cone cart, with signage on the sides. I have some customers inside the mall, and I have to pack all my tools in from the parking lot, and the cart makes it much easier. Plus the cart has a pocket with fliers and business cards so people can take one when they walk by. We have “mall walker” groups at opening time when we are cleaning

I know yesterday I drove 1 1/2 hours out to West/Central Jersey to do a very large estimate. Cost me $20 in gas alone. if it took you 3 hours round trip, and one hour cleaning, figuring @ $20 in gas, you’d make precisely $2.50 an hour.

Actually – as Shawn has already pointed out – windshield time is just a small part of your total expenses. Knowing all of your expenses is important so you know how much you have to make before you are making the amount of profit needed to stay in business.

Your profit should be enough to pay your personal – not business – expenses (mortgage or rent, medical, utilities, food, entertainment, etc.), savings, and whatever else you desire. In this case, “profit” is your salary or wages.
For example, an account that pays you (I believe you have no employees?) $100 per visit, perhaps one-third ($33) may go to business expenses and two-thirds ($67) as profit. You need to charge enough to try to live the way you want.
Might be getting 2 accounts that will pay $35hr both will take 2hrs a piece. I will know by tuesday if they will award me the accounts. My first steps not being afraid to ask more if I have to travel long distance, but my inner feeling is telling me that they will give accounts to someone who is cheaper.
I drive 2and1/2hrs one way to work. I bought this guys customer list and it 40% higher than i charged in my town. I was thinking great i have to keep track of two pricing methods. I then after a few months i wizened up and used the higher pricing. Granted I spend 6hrs on the road, but i am getting 35-40/hr driving.
Plus, if you carry a palm sized recorder, you can memo yourself about what is going on during your workday. I carry one because I can have a phone conversation with one person, and forget it after dealing with another phone call…especially if I am driving and can’t write it down immediately. I complete the call and talk into the recorder.
I also record stores and construction sites I want to contact as I am driving along if there is a board up with their contact info. Windshield time can be productive time.
I am buying one of the recorder not because it will remind me later but very important for safety, I mean driving, on the cell and try writing. I am all about safety.
