The good Lord blessed us with a fat new van. But we have a glaring problem: vertical utilization.
I’d prefer not to spend thousands of dollars, but any tips on how to go about this (or what not to do), or even solid Youtube videos you recommend would be great.
Never owned a van before, so this is very unfamiliar waters. Thanks in advance!
when i got my van it had diy shelving, i removed it to put in my 250 gallon tank.
steveo just did a video on his new van with bought shelving.
basically with either the uprights are just fastened to the sides and floor with strapping bent to fit and self tapping screws. then shelves across usually with a ledge to stop stuff coming off.
in mine the uprights were cut dtraight on the inside and roughly shaped to follow the contour of the vehicle side wall on the out side.
Ah, the unparalleled satisfaction that is of having your gear organized! (Is my OCD showing?) I have been storing things loose on the floor in boxes and milkcrates for the past couple years and finally got around to building some shelving for my Chevy Express van this winter. What a great improvement its been to have things organized while also taking up such a small footprint in my van.
I followed this video on youtube and replicated his build style. It seemed a little jenky but it turned out quite nice to be honest, just be sure to use wood glue and make sure that the notchs are cut exactly to the size of your 4x1s and 2x1s used for horizontal pieces, that gives the shelf a lot more rigidity and strength. I used a sheet of plywood to make the three verticals after using cardboard to create a template that mapped my vans walls. I went with the dimension of 54" length, 45" height and 16" depth and secured it into the metal ribs inside using multiple screws. Probably not the best route but its not holding a lot of weight so I think it should be fine for the time being. All in all I’d recommend this one, my build cost was about $200 and took me 10 or so man hours to build because I’m a bit slower than some. That being said, it sure beats paying $4k+ for a metal shelf that you still have to assemble!
Here’s what my final result was after following that video as a template. Slapped a couple coats of paint on and shes sturdy as all can be!
I went to optimum floor care, they customize vans and fabricate carpet cleaning equipment. We used shelves you buy at Costco. The kind used in your garage. They were cut to size and welded in. Besides shelving, they installed a generator, 3 6-inch pipes to hold WFP’S, 2 Screws with wing-nuts to hold my Xero Pure in place, and hooks designed for my Little Giant 13 and 22.
