How would you bid these jobs?

1

The first lady is a d-bag. Ask her what she does for a living. Then tell her thats an easy job and she gets paid too much!!! I hate those people who tell me they can do it themselves. You should go up the on the price for her just for being a Bitch!!!

The second guy is a builder. Tell him to have his guys clean the windows. They’ll probably scratch them all to hell because the cheap a** sob probably installs crap windows with Old Castle glass. Then when his guys are done F*****g up all the windows he can rethink about your price and see what a bargain he’s getting. I would have charged him the same!!

#1 - Same price or even 50cents or $1/window higher.

#2 - CCU is expensive, don’t know what’s the going rate in your area, but don’t let them run your business.

The 1st lady would get a higher price.
The builder wouldn’t get me to bid another project for him. Just a waste of time.

i knew if you responded to my post you would say exactly what i was thinking haha
maybe ill double the price for the lady with the 125 windows… see if i can hear her **** herself over the phone
and we’ll see if the builder calls me… seems like a nice guy… just taken back by the price.

These are the kind of “customers” who, even if you did the windows at a lower price, will look for a lower price next time from someone else. I’d try to reason with the builder about his own rep. and how how you will only help by doing it right and safely.(Don’t forget the scratched glass waiver). The $12 per double-hung would be quite low around these parts- esp. for a CCU, but he may send all work your way and it may pan out in the future.
I’d lose that lady.

Regardless of how you feel. Be professional, give your price and move on. Is the 1st ladys price just for her or all of the friends? If it’s her price only then I would tell her “I’ll do your house for FREE! But only after all 5 of your friends pay full price and their jobs are completed.” Friends can’t force friends to buy your service and in most cases the more friends on the list the more problems with getting everyone completed to the point where you can complete the 1st customer. It sucks but it’s part of the game you play with res work. We hear this all the time “I have friends who want the service.” I now respond with “That’s great have them give me a call and when they have service I’ll work with you on your price.” Most of the time the friends don’t call ever. And when they do the person who referred them get’s 10% off. No differant then any other 1st time customer but hey they don’t need to know that.
2nd guy. Who cares. Builders are the worste people on the planet next to a car salesman. I think it would be fair to say that most cut corners to save a buck and could careless about quality. In their mind, if the building stands up for 15/20 years they did a good job. The houses and buildings these guys build today can’t compare to an older home. Why is that? It’s called pride in your work. It’s just not there today. It’s all about the god all mighty buck. Tell him to put his $7 per hour labor on the job.

she says they all want good pricing… honestly i cant go any lower than i have gone for her at $5/window, have 2 guys on the job and make any money… obviously if she hasnt found anyone since june or july when she called she isnt going to… at least not for the price she is willing to pay. as for her friends if she doesnt feel like she is getting a deal i lose those jobs as well…
i would LOVE to be unprofessional and tell her “G.F.Y” but anyone who knows me knows i put up with a lot of b.s. on a daily basis and dont lose my cool… just another d-bag looking for a deal

Estimate#1- The estimate was 3 months ago, so raise the price. When she asks why its higher, even tho there is more work, let her know that her price is based on what it will take to get the job done correctley. “This price is actually the same price to me, this is the lowest possible price taking into consideration my insurances and the time it will take to complete the job and do it right.” If she dont like it, let her know you can teach her how to use a squeegee. Dont get fooled by the dangelling(?) carrot!

Estimate #2- Who cares!?! Nobody wants to work for a builder anyway. Just for this reason! They are supposed to KNOW and actually care about quality. Now you know what kind of home he buildis!

We work with 5 or 6 builders. 2 of whom, we have been doing work for for at least 20 years. Never a problem. The other builders are great also, because they have the same kinds of standards we do and they know that we come in to clean the windows on one of their jobs the windows are done right the first time. They always pay within a week. So, not all builders are bad and not all cut corners. I highly recommend getting in with a local builder if you can. The big thing is when a builder does call for a price, to educate them on Fabricating Debris. Most have no idea what it is. Explain how if someone who is not familiar with it cleans the windows, it can cost him thousands of dollars if windows are scratched. Once they have some education and see that you really know what your talking about, chances are very good that you’ll get the job.

I liked what Juggernaught said- but she is insisting on a package deal then right? Well, you already know what to do. Why DONT you give her- her house for free? Or at half of what you would normally charge which will still be alittle lower for her house.

Bottom line- you dont make money, she will just have to find someone else.

I gotta chime in on this one-
That is awesome for you man!! Let me tell ya tho,
4 builders out here (nation wide) Shea Homes, K Hovnanian, Concordia, and another one that I wont say because I cant…
These guys were horrible! They would take MONTHS and MONTHS to pay, one of them took 8 months and negotiated 10 cents on the dollar on a 40,000.00 dollar bill! (Was my old nazi boss, not me)

They ALL were getting unreal low prices from my boss. We were cleaning the windows on the models on all of the sites in San Diego, I am talking probably 7 to 10 2000 sq. ft. to 9000 sq. ft. homes (model homes) a day. Of course not 10 of the 9000 but you know what I mean- hauling tail all day. She was getting about 130 bucks on each one, except the 5 6 and 8 thousand sq ft homes, on those she would get 200 a pop. On the french windows she would get something so low, she would be stressing everyone out because it took us so long she ended up losing hundreds because she under bid.

And still…builder would not pay. Builder complains about how Juanito from accross the border will do it for HALF that price.

You got good builders…so cool!

I wish we had them out here. They definitely keep you busy when times are good.

1 IMo thats exceptionally cheap, $500/ 125 window is $4 a window
If it’s exterior only , it’s quite a deal, Exterior and interior it’s beyond cheap, I really wouldn’t have believed that anyone around here was working for that

2 CCU is almost impossible to price without seeing the job, but I would say you are on the low end, That would be close to my price for regular wash,

Caveat, maybe you have a different way of counting windows than I do
edit: just read auntjemimas post, I agree, we work with a good few builders and they are all great to work with
