I finally found a flaw in the Ninja!

Ok, I have loved the Unger Ninja since it arrived in my wcr order way back when. Today changing out a blade on one of my 30" I noticed they are NOT using stainless springs. The springs are rusting out! Not too happy with this. As many of you know, taking apart older Unger handles would reveal year after year well used springs were still good.
Unger, what’d up with this!? Look at any of my posts and you’ll find positive comments about the Ninja line… Well, why go cheap on the springs?

Yep. I bet its cuz it was the first ones that rolled out. I noticed that too. I use my handles with my ettore wide channels. I love that the spring clamp on the ninja handle is so easy to use though, like when you pull it towards the stem it opens up pretty good where the ettore super system handle, works cool but needs adjusting.

Stainless steel can also rust/oxidize over time, just not as fast as carbon steel.

I hadn’t looked. Now I’ll have to check mine.

Over time is not a year though. I guess I have come to expect more from my German engineered tools.

I agree Tory, its the best wide body handle out there, I just wish they were more careful about the material of the spring.

In-laws neighbors were looking into some custom made S/S exterior permanent mounted chairs for their front lawn area. I know a guy that was planning on making them for them. After talking with him, he had concerns with the S/S being exposed to sprinklers, rain and elements etc (more of a maintenance issue). So I would assume that a tool that is exposed with water, cleaning solution, etc… could oxidize. Would like it not to happen but apparently it does.

This news isn’t the greatest because I felt the handle was the only good thing about the Ninja in general.

Maybe engineered in Germany, but it’s not marked made in Germany like the standard Ergo Tec handles are. Channels are made in China.

Thanks for posting info. When we introduced Ninja, its springs were coated in black, so that they would visually seem invisible, but of course, as the coating wears off, the result is rusting. We have since revised this design and Ninja now uses stainless steel springs which will not rust.

Thanks,
Jeff at Unger

Jeff, I sure do appreciate your quick reply, innoavtive ideas always need some tweaking! (just think of some new models of cars) keep up the good work! Dave.

Thank you Jeff. That’s what I’m talking about, right there is true customer service! Explanation and then an answer to the problem.

For me true customer service is when they fix a problem with the product you bought, not just tell you it’s flawed. I got a safety recall notice this week from Chrysler (probably the 2nd or 3rd since we bought our van) to have a (potential) problem fixed. Granted, they have to deal with monumental lawsuits if they try to brush it under the carpet but it’s still nice to get something fixed rather than buying a new one.

I use the Unger Boab, pouch, squeegee and scrubber (sorry, not rubber) as primary tools so I’m a huge fan. I’m just saying , when someone says “oh yeah” when they’re called out on something my first thought isn’t “true customer service”.

Say you scratched a clients window and after getting payed the client calls and says “I think you scratched a window”. Do you respond by saying “yeah, I wasn’t so good that day, but when I clean your windows the next time I’ll be more experienced. Thanks.”

After reading the Hunger Games (I hear there’s a movie now) I think Unger should think of something clever to compensate for all those rusting squeegees. Maybe an Unger Games where we’re all thrown into an arena with nothing but our prototype Ninjas, and whoever makes it out alive gets a free HiFlo Pure Water Cleaning System?

OK, I’m starting to ramble. I don’t think I’ve used my Ninja enough to have rust issues anyway.
