Identify this scratch

I did a window today that had a strange “scratch” on it. I’ve seen defects like this before. Almost certainly a manufacturing defect.

Imagine a typical grouping of scratches caused by a hunk of mortar being rubbed across the glass or whatever. Now imagine that scratch with a dark, metallic look to it. That’s what this looks like. I’ve never really bothered to try to identify the cause of scratches like these, but the superintendent on this job was wondering how it could happen and i realized i didn’t have an informed answer to give him.

so what’s your best theory as to how these types of scratches occur? my best guess is it has something to do with the tin/float phase of the manufacturing process, since the scratch group definitely has a metallic hue to it.

also, this is NOT tempered glass. And it’s not an IG unit. its just a basic piece of annealed, single pane glass.

One thing is for sure. It got there. Not sure what kind of scratch it is but manufacture or something, somewhere, came into contact with the glass.

When I see a group of metallic scratches like that I often assume that a contractor working on the site had accidentally hit it with a ladder or scaffold piece. Another possibility is the glass installer scratched it with a tool (I’ve seen where caulk got on a window and the guy used a metal putty knife on the dry window to get it off). Or sometimes, the glass sits on the ground on site before they install it and it gets bumped and rubbed against with various objects. Just a few things I could think of that I’ve seen before.

BTW, whats up with the framing in the middle of that window?

sorbo channels can do that too, perhaps aluminum or other metal type ( I dont mean a Sorbo channel did it, i mean it looks like aluminum from the pix to me)

does your fingernail get caught in it? looks cosmetic

BTW, hope you didnt set anything on the countertops :wink:

I like the glass sits on the ground and rubs up against something theory

If it’s silvery and greyish in color it’s an aluminum burn. Pole or ladder rubbed up against it. Easy to polish out looks like crap charge at least 200 on a circular window like that

Wedding ring is my guess

the dark color tells me aluminum.
closer pics would help.
If it is aluminum I’d say that (insert contractor here) put up a ladder and their “t-shirt & duck tape” ladder toppers have worn through.
who was inspecting/removing the window divide?
get closer, photo the metal shine in the scratches (if possible)

good luck, I hate it when I discover stuff like that… we all know who gets blamed.

you guys are all pretty smart. i was probably waaay overthinking this. you’re probably right- a ladder or scaffold rubbed against it. i’m going to try one restore to see if that does anything.

I really doubt one restore will do anything it’s actual transferred into the glass and has to be polished out.

do you think cerium oxide would do it? like maybe one of henry’s wobble wheel thingies?

This is coming from way out in left field, but maybe try bar keeper’s friend first. It’s what is recommended to get metal marks off of hard coat low-e. Maybe it will work on this in the same way?

I was thinking the same thing… I’ll give it a try.
