Is there an easy way to remove window film?

I’ve removed window film for a couple of customers. One had very damaged film on one window, and the other just moved in and didn’t want it. On both occasions I used a razor, lots of soap, water and elbow grease. Is there an easier way? Is there some chemical that will soften the film or glue?

If the film was on tempered glass, removal with a razor could be a no no, so just looking for options if this comes up in the future.

Thanks

I’ve used ammonia and razors in the past - once the film is removed. The ammonia primarily was for the remaining glue. Not pretty. Not pleasant. But effective.

Thanks Rich. I’ll try that next time.

Get a heat gun. many times you can warm it up pretty good and it peels off, sometimes not. It definitely helps though. now weather or not you have access to a power supply is another question. Luckily I have a lot of extension cord.

I use amonia mixed With soap to help it stick. Soak the window with a sprayer and cover it with a plastic trash bag to keep it wet. Let it sit for 15-30 min. Longer the better. When you’re ready to scrape start at the top and peel/ scrape a strip all the way across the top of the film. If possible you want to remove it in one big piece. Once you get a section of the top peeled back keep spraying ammonia between the section you pulled back and the glass. It will work its way down and break down the glue. Be patient and try to peel it all evenly so it doesn’t rip. I know it sounds like alot but once you get the basic technique down it beats the he’ll out of trying to scrape dry glue and tint. After you get the top peeled back you should be able to just pull it off with your hands. Wear gloves and a respirator.

Thank you. I knew it was a rule to avoid ammonia with cleaning film, but I had always assumed that it would fog or dull the film. I did not know that it was the adhesive that it had an effect on. I will definitely use ammonia if this comes up again.

I have one of these in my future too…does oil flo work as well as ammonia for this? Was thinking of using it in combination with a hair dryer.
