IT IS ILLEGAL to put flyers ON a mailbox

I got a call from the post master saying that they just took all my flyers down and destroyed them. I remember seeing this conversation on here a while ago and other people were not as unlucky as me. Just a couple blowing off into the street.

Postal service can only leave things in a mailbox. Use direct mail and you would be fine. If you leave a flier leave it at the door.

Put them up yourself, on doors, with little stickers. Works great for me.

I don’t have the cahones to mess with Newman

Thanks to Chris for for the idea of using the little stickers. I went to Staples or OfficeMax… or whatever it was, and bought the clear mailing labels that are meant to be printed on with your home computer. They are frosty clear, so they don’t look too bad on your flyer/postcard, and they are easy to peal as you walk. They don’t leave any residue on the door or the flyer, and you can keep track of how many flyers you have done by how many sheets of labels you go through. I bought the Avery brand and the label size that has 600 per pack- for like $11.00.

Thanks again for the good tip Chris!

If you get the 3/4 x 1/2 inch ones they’re like $6 for 1000  At Staples, that is

3M makes a “post-it” glue stick so you can apply it to the back of your flyers or busness cards. It can give the impression of custom made flyers oe business cards. Staples carries it. Here is the link to the product. It’s cheap too.

3M Scotch® Restickable Glue Stick, .20 oz | Staples®

Cool, I didn’t see that when I went in, but I was in a hurry so I just grabbed a couple of the 600 packs. I’ll look for those soon cause I’m about to start my Halloween marketing campaign with a new postcard design. So those will be even better! Thanks again Chris;)

Interesting! I may just have to give it a try.

Thats the beauty of this place! I love the new ideas that people have. I know this may seem like small potatoes to the “big dogs”, but there is something to be said for the little guy who’s creativity, ingenuity and strive for excellence- far exceed his bank account.

I’m not sure who it was that said this- but I think it was Henry Ford, who preferred to hire fat lazy guys…reason being is because he figured that anyone can hire a bunch of hard-workers, but he wanted a bunch of “hard-thinkers”. Basically, he realized that a bunch of “fat guys” would figure out ways to do things easier and simpler- instead of just using good’ol fashion hard-work and “elbow-grease”. And if I recall correctly, the assembly line was invented (by some fat guys) who worked for Henry Ford. (ok I’m sure all the Chevy guys will think of something funny about now;) )

Now, don’t quote me on all this because it’s late, and I’m tired- plus it’s been many-many years since I read that somewhere. The point is however, that some of us have to figure out ways of doing things that are different from the norm- simply because we don’t always have the luxury of just having someone else do it for us. Dont get me wrong, I’m not saying that the “big dogs” are not full of creativity and ingenuity, or have a strive for excellence. They obviously do- because you don’t get to be a "big dog’, unless you have all that and more!

I look forward to the day that my hard-work can afford me the ability to send out 50,000 or 100,000 flyers by mail (oh man that will be sweet!). But until then- I welcome great ideas from others who have either been in my shoes- or are in my shoes.

Oh, and maybe cause I’m kinda a “fat guy” too- I like to not only work hard- but smart too (there is usually a better way to do something- if only you ask or research it). Someday I hope to be a “big fat dog”

Yep! The post office is CRACKING DOWN BIGTIME! Nothing can even be taped on a mailbox. One of my crews left an invoice in a customers mailbox back in May and I received a nasty letter regarding fines and so on. One thing that I noticed was that they are now DOCUMENTING businesses that break this rule in the postal database. Your offense is now documented and can be accessed by other towns, cities, nationwide for all I know. It used to be that certain towns in my area were pickier that others, its different now.

Steve

Ive heard so many mixed reviews on what you can do, with the box, the flag and the post… I would do the label thing to, I also would do magnets on metal mailboxes and posts…

I say better safe then sorry, Ive been threatened with a fine a couple of times but I dont know of anyone thats actually got one.

I always understood the post office owns the mail box even though its yours. I know you cant put anything inside the mail box. But does anyone know definativley if you can put it behind the flag

Then I want to know why the Sunday paper delivery is placed in my mailbox.

because its on a Sunday- no mail. Im surprised that the carrier would even attempt that.

I found this USPS - Residential Mailbox Standards .

A while back we used to put stamped “We were at your neighbors” postcards into mailboxes after jobs, the postmaster in one town called and said thats ok but make sure that you cancel the stamp. We had to put lines, in pen across the stamp, so they couldn’t be re-used. I’m sure things are stricter now but if your in a smaller area you could try giving your postmaster a call. This is for 4 or 5 neighbors I’m talking about not entire streets or towns.

this line in that link says it all : Advertising on a mailbox or its supporting post is prohibited.

Checkout the attached image, its the back of a guys business card I got this weekend at the NCE event.

The postmaster in my town also called me and told me he found a flyer inside the box which is illegal he said ,but he said that i could attach to the box as long as i didnt open it. But Im gonna call the post office tomorrow to make sure he was telling me right. He did say it was a federal offense. Could every area be different? You wouldnt think so…
