Lady ask me if I would consider a senior discount?

You can get a discount at McDonalds?

Give her a discount if she gets her windows done at the same time.

Seriously, who needs a discount at McDonald’s? Dollar menu didn’t fit in the budget?

Well, I kind of jumped at the first response I got from @IronLionZion…I kind of wish I didn’t now reading all the other responses but it’s ok. This is a small 1 story 1000 sqft home. I’m new in business this is only my 3rd gutter job so we will see. In the future I think I will tell them I only offer discounts for repeat customers, however, since you are a senior I have no problem taking $10 off the bill.

Honestly, who cares if everyone else is anti-discount? If your personal values dictate that you would like to do that and you feel you can do it, then do it. My personal values dictate that older people do deserve a little extra kindness from younger people. 5% isn’t gonna break me, but it means something to an older person. This is less a business decision, it’s a personal one. Do what feels right to you. Also, not saying you should just be giving money away, it is a business you’re running, but generosity does have a way of returning to you. Jmo.

I’d say make a judgement call. If she’s a sweet old lady that you enjoy working for, sure, give her the discount. Who knows, maybe she’s so nice she helps lower your blood pressure and in turn extends your life a little. So yeah 10 bucks is worth it.

On the flip side, if she drives a Benzo and strikes you as a life long chiseler looking to work you over for ten bucks then hold your price and reconsider wether you want to further your business relationship with her.

That’s the beauty of running your own business. You make the call…

I agree, I have a generous discount offer that I make for Quarterly customers who order inside and outside window cleaning. I have a semi-annual exterior only customer I am waiting for a call back from, he wants a quarterly maintenance and I left a message for him while he was out that my discount only covers complete inside and outside quarterly. His is a particularly difficult one to do outside so NO discount, unless he orders complete in/out service. I know the dollars add up when you have a huge golf course front home with big 3 story windows, but work is work. Discounts are incentive rewards for coming back with those big jobs. I see too many that wait a year or two and then the work is difficult because nothing has been done in 18 - 24 months. So, a discount for coming out to do a job for you? Depending on the job for senior or Military $10 - $20? and they can apply that to the grocery bill or gas tank - where incidentally, there is no discount at the register or pump. More if you’re feeling generous.

I get that all the time, after I’m asked “how much it would be to clean 3 windows that aren’t that bad”.

I give them the minimum and tell them that they may as well get the rest of the windows done too. Then the discount thing. NOOOOOOOOOOO

If they can’t swing the money, then what I do is tell them that if I’m in the area where they are (if I’m in the area at all in the next few weeks I’ll let them know what day and when I MIGHT be able to be there and I’ll do it for free (just the 3 windows if it ain’t a pain in the neck to do but it almost always is).

Reason why, is because it might as well be free anyway…and when you do it like that there’s a higher chance that they’ll be happy with the job done and you can move on with the rest of what you gotta do.

It’s hard to feel them out to see if you’re being scammed or not. But they may just not have anyone to do these things for them. That’s one thing I just don’t get is how someone can just let elderly family be alone after all they’ve done.

At the same time, I got a family of my own I need to look out for and I can’t go helping people out at the expense of my own. Sometimes it does come out to that.

I really don’t give discounts of any kind to anyone. The job is the job and it costs what it costs.

I don’t ageee with this at all. Even if you need to charge below your minimum, something like $40 is better then doing it for free. If you do it for one old lady then you need to do it for others if they find out.

I am looking at dropping my quarterly discount next year. Some jobs are quite big and the discount adds up to $140 or more. One particular job comes to mind where the ladder sets are really straining to gain access, or just several that are just less than easy access. I may lose a few regular jobs, so maybe a more nominal incentive of $25 - $50 off.

The only discount I gave was if they paid a year in advance I’d give them
one exterior only service for half off.

Only a handful accepted and didn’t repeat.

As for not charging the elderly Lady, I hear ya. My wife says the same
thing, but we all have our weaknesses right? Lol

Lol like Microsoft worker need a discount…ridiculous

Yeah,

  • 20%

Yes - Always… 10% for Sr’s and Vets - it’s just good business and look at everyone that doesn’t, you will set yourself apart and can boast about giving Senior and Military/First Responder Discounts on your website.

Think of it this way… 10% will be about $11… what will you spend $11 on that you can do without next week? Maybe take a lunch one day or something.
