Million Dollar Company

I think there are certainly other luxuries and write offs you can take advantage of that could easily bring your “real” salary from 50k - 100k per million.

Yes!

I think the numbers are very very conservative in the blue print but its a great way to play around plug in different numbers, I really think two office people would be more then enough for a 10 man field operation, I also think you could be way lower on advertising once you have a established business and repeat I would say 5%, I also think you could probably get that average gross per crew up up a little bit, just with these minor tweaks your looking at a easy 200 K for the owner. Of course this is all just in my mind.

The thing I want to know is what formula do you use to see if your area can support a million dollar company???

my Holiday gift to you Chris…

On this day of “Fast Food Employee Strikes”, I think the greatest dilemma to a million dollar company is not a matter of OUR ambition and drive to reach those goals, it’s the lack of having a long term reliable workforce to support the structures needed. I’m in a much smaller market than most, but I have heard from nearly every other business owner in town, the same problems of finding and keeping employees. A couple of my long termers have moved on this year to better themselves through education, but they are an exception for this markets “employee pool”. It seems no one wants responsibilities. In our ski towns, the “ski bum” culture has just become a “bum” culture. Since we are seasonal towns anyway, several of us have looked into the International Student Visas programs, to just bypass the revolving local employees situation.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the “We need $15/hr to flip burgers” situation?

Thats a good question… I would say 2 factors that could contribute to the “formula” would be:

Population total with in an hour radius of you
Median Household Income

And what types of numbers would you be looking for? Is there a quick and dirty formula for determining this? I suppose it would be more of an abstract ‘feeling’ of what size company could be sustainable in a given area.

Get a better job…

The 15 is just a bargaining postion, they would settle for a $1 to $2 more per hour.

If you forged through life without gaining any skills and have to flip burgers at 45 im sorry for you but forget 15hr for a unskilled job. Quit crying and march forward.

If you dont have the brains, skill, or sheer willpower to seize to take what you want, then your weak and you’ll get no tears from me.

I say- Fine, here’s your 15bucks… now guess what?

 • your rent went up
 • your bus fare doubled
 • food prices have now tripled

Feel better?
Enjoy your “raise.”

Too much of a “gotta get mine” culture going on today.
Nobody thinks about the larger picture… just gimme gimme gimme.

Minimum wage should be next to nothing IMO.
Why would anyone want to bust their ass for $15/hr when they can stand behind a counter?

– somebody has to (literally) pick up the garbage in society.

Yes, I’ve heard from business owner after business owner how hard it is to find good people. Sounds like you have a particular challenge in the regard. I put a lot of effort into creating a good work environment for my team members. What are the little daily frustrations they deal with? How can I create systems the alleviate them? This is where communication is so important. I always tell my guys, if there’s anything making their job more difficult, let me know about it. I can’t help if I don’t know the problem exists. I think a lot of employees get fed up and quit with out really addressing the problems with ownership.

I am willing to bet that once they do get that $15 hr, they will be then bitching about their food stamp benefits getting dropped. Then they’ll throw another fit about that.

What is the minimum wage in the USA. In Australia I think it is now around$17 per hour and our economy is going great unlike the US economy

Can we get this thread back on track? Minimum wages discussions could be a thread of its own.

I think the federal is in the $7.50 area, its not great.

Theres no question Australians economy is the envy of the developed world. Been rock steady for the past 20 years and barely flinched during the economic crisis. But you guys a currently facing a poor outlook on consumer spending and if you want to keep the good times going Australia is going to have to diverse from the mining boom. Its been great for ya but I think its almost peaked (cant remember) while the US is on the forefront of a natural gas boom.

Also our dollar is worth more… So FACE

I’m pretty sure most would consider employee pay/retention valuable in building a $1mil company. But, I suppose we could start a new thread at the OP request.

I believe I just did that

I think at least one of biggest ways, reason, whatever is having systems in place for everthing in the company. Chris put up some great systems in the WCRA area which totally rocked my world and made put a lot of work into mine (thanks Chris btw)

There is no way a window cleaning company can do 1mil a year without systems in place so employees know what and how to do it. The owner can not do, see, and handle everything that comes down the pike. Having these systems in place helps stream line everything so each customer receives the same great service, every employee does there job the same way, and keeps the company a well oiled machine.

Now you’re just rubbing it in. Guess I better get on that membership
