I wonder who here wants a million dollar company and why?
Before I sold out last month… Not a week went by that I didn’t have a tiny fantasy in the back of my head about just firing everyone and heading out everyday to clean glass by myself.
My fantasy went like this
Work 4 days a week
cherry pick our huge database
Do 1 k a day in rev
basically only WFP
Only work 8 months a year
describe that typical 1k day based on what’s in your database to pick from in your fantasy:
how many job stops
within what time radius from your home
how far apart are jobs (within 15 min, more, less)
res or comml
size of jobs (or your favorite size home sft)
Avg $ amount of jobs
in that day how many 1 or 2 story or 3
how many in and out, or out only
wpole only outside, no squeegee ever?
how many hours on the glass out of 8 hour day? (1,000 a day with 6.2 = $162 on the job PMH)
start at what time
home by what time
sure a lot of questions but its not a test, come on Chris go for it, craft that day in your mind a little further for us
I think it’s interesting that one of the most successful persons to own a wc business says that daily he thought of downsizing but then someone who is not that big wants that scenario.
I’m not trying to be a jerk but curious what the real reason someone wants that large of a service company.
Because I’ve seen another company, I used to work for get pretty close. I know it’s doable, that company wasn’t managed well, and there was very little innovation. We can work year round here. I think I can do it with 5-6 trucks, not a huge deal, really. And notice he said he fantasized about it, but he never pulled the trigger; there’s a reason for that.

there’s always that pipedream of the business machine that runs itself and “prints money” for a person “with no input or effort from them whatsoever” while they are on the beach with a drink in their hand on a carribean island
how many affluent customers have we seen this ‘appear’ to be the case?
more discretionary time was my reason and I found anything but more discretionary time, I found an incredible unproductive negative amount. All about leverage sweet spots for those who want time
why aren’t there a load of other large wc companies? (besides the usual industry limitations)
I think what can happen is as a business grows it can turn into a personality mismatch what’s required to reach the next level, what the business needs done vs what inspires the owner and gives them tenacity (aside from funds) to do it
the Steve Jobs movie was an interesting illustration of this as the core people started peeling off for one reason or another
happens with music bands too doesn’t it? sometimes lots of member changes or drama as celebrity grows
business is a very interesting thing, as personal and individual as people many times
Sorta. I seen how good things were there even though the management wasn’t that good. Basically I saw what was possible, and I liked it. I like working hard and building things. I want something I can sell or pass on to my kids when I retire. I don’t mind working hard, I’m not one of those guys that wants to sit on the beach. I like to work 9 hrs a day, have my weekends off and a couple weeks of vacation per year.

I have never had the structure of working for someone else. Literally started my business at 17 and before that worked for my father. I think that has formed my outlook on what I want but I can see where you are coming from.
I’m competitive with myself and I have that drive to build but I channel it in other ways.
I think its cool this forum allows me to get inside the minds of other window cleaners
