Million Dollar Company

job size plays a huge role

big difference between dealing in 1,000’s vs low/hi 100’s vs sub 100

25 quarterly $10K high rise accounts and there’s your mil right there

vs 1,300 $15 weekly storefronts

way different dynamics in admin, drive times, efficiencies, job turnover etc

big pieces build big things faster

plus jobs that take over 8 hours means a whole day of production

40 man hour jobs mean 5 guys there all day

200 man hour jobs mean 5 guys there all week

that’s movin’ lots of money fast, fast, fast

Without getting super off track…

I wonder who here wants a million dollar company and why?

Before I sold out last month… Not a week went by that I didn’t have a tiny fantasy in the back of my head about just firing everyone and heading out everyday to clean glass by myself.

My fantasy went like this

Work 4 days a week
cherry pick our huge database
Do 1 k a day in rev
basically only WFP
Only work 8 months a year

160 working days a year = 160k in my pocket.

it was a nice fantasy

$1,000 per day by yourself is pretty good. I am happy when I can get $6-700, but it’s tough to do that consistently, alone. One of these days…

I have no desire to have a million dollar company. Two crews, maybe 3 max. More money, more crews, more problems, more stress.

3 to 5 guys including myself working a couple days is perfect.

The larger you get you become about volume and that leads to lower prices and more stress to manage.

Live simple. Live happier.

cool, curiosity reigns

can you go a step further with this?

describe that typical 1k day based on what’s in your database to pick from in your fantasy:

how many job stops
within what time radius from your home
how far apart are jobs (within 15 min, more, less)
res or comml
size of jobs (or your favorite size home sft)
Avg $ amount of jobs
in that day how many 1 or 2 story or 3
how many in and out, or out only
wpole only outside, no squeegee ever?
how many hours on the glass out of 8 hour day? (1,000 a day with 6.2 = $162 on the job PMH)
start at what time
home by what time

sure a lot of questions but its not a test, come on Chris go for it, craft that day in your mind a little further for us

I do.

I am very curious to ask, why?

I think it’s interesting that one of the most successful persons to own a wc business says that daily he thought of downsizing but then someone who is not that big wants that scenario.

I’m not trying to be a jerk but curious what the real reason someone wants that large of a service company.

Because I’ve seen another company, I used to work for get pretty close. I know it’s doable, that company wasn’t managed well, and there was very little innovation. We can work year round here. I think I can do it with 5-6 trucks, not a huge deal, really. And notice he said he fantasized about it, but he never pulled the trigger; there’s a reason for that.

not speaking for anyone here just my observations

there’s always that pipedream of the business machine that runs itself and “prints money” for a person “with no input or effort from them whatsoever” while they are on the beach with a drink in their hand on a carribean island

how many affluent customers have we seen this ‘appear’ to be the case?

more discretionary time was my reason and I found anything but more discretionary time, I found an incredible unproductive negative amount. All about leverage sweet spots for those who want time

why aren’t there a load of other large wc companies? (besides the usual industry limitations)

I think what can happen is as a business grows it can turn into a personality mismatch what’s required to reach the next level, what the business needs done vs what inspires the owner and gives them tenacity (aside from funds) to do it

the Steve Jobs movie was an interesting illustration of this as the core people started peeling off for one reason or another

happens with music bands too doesn’t it? sometimes lots of member changes or drama as celebrity grows

business is a very interesting thing, as personal and individual as people many times

off topic huh? one thought leads to another . . .

Sigh…

Well I figure it would be possible because I accumulated a customer list 25,000 people deep. I could totally just cherry pick that.

My ideal day is 1 house 8 - 10 hours worth of work…

Now that I think about it I would probably only need 3 days a week @ 1k a day

So that about 120, 1k jobs a year. Im pretty sure I could mail my 25k list and get 120 of them to spend 1k with me.

SO WFP only, I don’t mind the inside, its kinda nice sometimes. So in and out would be fine.

Residential only and not more than 45 minutes a day.

I couldn’t help myself. It’s the last one. I promise. At least until the next one

So your reason is because another company almost did it?

Sorta. I seen how good things were there even though the management wasn’t that good. Basically I saw what was possible, and I liked it. I like working hard and building things. I want something I can sell or pass on to my kids when I retire. I don’t mind working hard, I’m not one of those guys that wants to sit on the beach. I like to work 9 hrs a day, have my weekends off and a couple weeks of vacation per year.

Skilled labor is very hard to scale. Seasonality is the biggest problem, every issue can be traced back to that.

Interesting and that makes sense.

I have never had the structure of working for someone else. Literally started my business at 17 and before that worked for my father. I think that has formed my outlook on what I want but I can see where you are coming from.

I’m competitive with myself and I have that drive to build but I channel it in other ways.

I think its cool this forum allows me to get inside the minds of other window cleaners

for sure, we’re all here cause we aren’t scared to work and enjoy it

whether its a job or at the desk how many times do we get so absorbed and poof the days gone

we are not clock watchers in the sense of when’s it over, we’re producers, getting the project done

so true
