Actually Richard, ACWC uses a different brand of dish soap. Chris has said he would choose GG over dish soap if he were a solo operator but since he has employees it’s saved him money due to their using too much soap.
Randy,
I think buddy’s point is right on…No problem mixing the two, it’s just soap !

Dish soaps are pretty much all the same. I say Dish soap is fine and GG 3 or 4 is fine if that’s what you like using.
I doubt Chris would dis GG4 or 3 since his supply house sells it. His window cleaning company uses dish soap and has no problem with it. I don’t either and can’t understand why you are so bent on trying to convince folks that using dish detergent is unprofessional. Glass Gleam, Dawn, and other dish soaps do a great job on windows. Nothing you say is going to change that.
I love gg4! I wash my dishes with it too.
I don’t ever remember saying using dish soap was unprofessional. I have said it leaves more residue than GG. I have even pointed out that the manufacturer says not to use dish soaps on windows. You like dish soap, I prefer GG and that will likely never change but I think you are accusing me of something that someone else said.
Sorry Tony, maybe you have never come right out and said it but you always agree or “Like” the post that state that dish soap is not professional.
There’s still no documented test proving that dish soap leaves more residue than GG4 so you are making statements that are not known to be fact. I’m not pushing for you or anybody else to do a test because I really don’t care about the results of a test but let’s let facts be facts and opinions be opinions. In your opinion, dish soap leaves more residue. Your statement is in fact not fact unless it is proven to be fact.
Not the same correlation. Dawn dish soap works fine for a professional window cleaning. (Don’t forget to change out the water/solution when it gets dirty.) Now maybe vinegar, water and wadded up newspaper would relate to an accountant counting on fingers and toes. Dawn works great and is biodegradable. It also chases chinch bugs from the lawn if you dump your waste water/solution on those brown spots.

Thanks Dange! I have the utmost respect for you as you are a fine gentleman and also a True Son of Ettore or in other words a master window cleaner who knows his stuff. I’m glad we are friends too. Here’s to all of us window cleaners and the various soaps that we use daily to get the results that our customers appreciate.
Women have Soap Operas, we window dweebs have Soap Wars… Oh the drama, I love it!
Long live the soap wars!!
My favorite is GG7 with a dab of Dawn and a dab of TSP! It’s the ultimate window cleaning solution!! It has everything!
And yes, I said GG7. That’s GG4 + GG3 = GG7
Who thinks I’m wrong using my special blend soap and why???
Right On! Nothing wrong with that at all. It will clean glass really well and has slip or glide.
I think GG4 + GG3 still equals GG3.
Discuss among yourselves.
Or does it equal GGGG7?
I tried just tsp and water last week and it worked way better then I thought it would. If it had a nice smell like dawn I would consider using it on a regular basis.
This is confusing to me Richard. Don’t get me wrong - I like and respect you as a window cleaner but on the one hand you say I don’t have the facts and then go on to say if there were a test you wouldn’t care about the results. I have seen first hand more rapid resoiling of windows where dish soap was used. To me that is fact. I will be doing a test on this and hope you are at least open to the results.
Tony, I’m sorry to cause any confusion but I honestly do not care about test results. I don’t mean to sound sarcastic about it but I used GG4 for 4 years and went back to Dawn and will never go back to GG4 because I just don’t care for it. It cleans windows really well but I prefer Dawn which also cleans windows really well.
If the test was done by a well equipped lab with the right equipment and a staff of unbiased experts and the results were that GG4 leaves less residue I would accept it as fact but I would still stick with Dawn because I like it better than GG4. If there is a difference it is so petty that it truly does not matter to me.
I never said you "don’t have the facts. I said that what you are claiming about GG4 vs. dish soap is not a proven and documented fact. You may think and feel that it is fact but it is not scientifically proven and documented so I do not have to accept it as fact until it is scientifically proven and documented.
You are a very bright fellow and I like you for your wonderful personality and respect you for your passion for helping other window cleaners. But I would think that the test should be done by a well equipped professional team of experts in a controlled situation, and no bias towards GG products. Unfortunately this will probably never happen but if it did I would be open to the results. Still though, for me it would not change a thing. I would still prefer Dawn dish soap.
I personally think I get better overall results with GG4 over dawn/joy. Still, I don’t think what you use is a real issue. A professional can do a great job with Glass Plus if he really wants to. It’s personal preference and the impression it conveys to customers.
I’d use ammonia over everything, but too many people are bothered by it and there are safety concerns.
Well there you go, TSP is some good stuff and now you see I’m not just talking wildly !
It’s been around a long time and it’s pretty, pretty, pretty good for cleaning windows !
Keep working with it all you’ll switch to it as a major cleaner ! Good to see your openness De, that’s a sign to one being a 'Son of Ettore" !

In my opinion:
GG3, GG4: less residue (than dishsoap) but doesn’t clean fingerprints or grease very well… and doesn’t have enough glide for easy fanning
Dawn: lots of glide and cleaning power but can foam and leave residue, esp. on towels… not good for french panes
TSP: lots of cleaning power, no residue problem that I can see… but it’s toatally clear which can make fanning hard because you can’t see where you are going as well, doesn’t have the slip that dishsoap does. I can’t fan nearly as well with TSP as I can with dawn.
TSP: great for cut ups, straight pulling small residential windows, doesn’t leave any (or very little) residue, won’t get your towels sticky, detailing is a lot easier than using dawn.
As far as testing soaps: I cleaned two windows in my house with different detergents, dawn for one window and TSP for another (ran out of GG4 so I haven’t entered it into the arena yet). 2 months later… the dawn window has little bits of debris clinging to it but the TSP window is clean as a whistle.
I have a hard time believing that TSP when properly diluted is going to corrode window seals. I’ve never seen any problems with it. I just think that it’s main limitations are that it is harder to fan with it if it’s completely clear and it isn’t as slippery as dishsoap.
Combining soaps works well for a lot of people. Here’s a good recipe: 1 gallon of water, 2 teaspoons TSP, 1/4 teaspoon Dawn…
cleaning power, glide, just the right amount of suds, what more could you ask for?
Results may vary according to water TDS, climate, user and other factors that need to be taken into consideration. Please do not operate squeegees under the influence of alcohol or other medications. If a rash develops seek medical attention and flush eyes and armpits with water.
