My last window cleaner did it for

Did a quote today for a ranch style with a second floor bedroom suite. The customer said after I gave her the quote that the last guy did inside and out plus mirrors for $150. I barely skipped a beat and said “I can’t do that, $528, not including the mirrors; inside and out, tracks, screens, and frames.” I also mentioned that if you can keep that guy you should because I’m not even the most expensive. During the conversation she said the guy had passed away a couple of years ago. We agreed to bi-annual whole house; Quarterly backside of the house in/out plus mirrors. ($150).

Who are these guys charging peanuts for multiple windows?

Sorry Garry I take the blame its me!

It’s nice you came up with a compromise.
Even though you are still the one taking a hit.

  • rather than saying “see ya.”

I can usually lessen a beating with an “outside only” compromise.

The mirrors are what hurts in your case.
(she obviously likes her mirrors clean.)

But I really like that you worked with an “important part of the house.”

I’ve mentioned that and didn’t get much support.
(first floor only for party, front curb appeal, etc…)

Eh? I’m not really taking a hit. I sold full price twice a year, partial clean partial price twice a year. Not a bad hit.

Even better!
You made it work!

Often, this group is quick to "just say no."
Sometimes it’s good to “just say ‘lets figure out a way.’”

You did that.

The best I’ve heard was… “The last guy did it for $120, but he got out of the business and took a job with a lawn company. Are you sure you can’t do it for any less?” I think my quote was like $325 and I had already priced the job significantly lower than usual.

I think a lot of the super cheap yet decent window cleaners are old timers who have amassed a large customer base after cleaning windows for 25 years. They stay busy and probably earn decent livings as owner operators.

It is tough telling a 90+ year old people you can’t do $4 storm windows and $2 regular windows anymore.

If you stay in the business, in 20 years you’ll face the same thing.

I always offer a discount based off their old price, by offering they do part of the work. Sure I can match that if you remove the screens and clean them and do the tracks and put the screens back in.

Yup !!! An they never raise there prices
We just had an old timer out here that just stopped cleaning
I’m getting calls from his old customers an so is a friend of mine.
I think from what I’m told he was like around $4 -$6 a window

Wait till those guys your talking about retiree in your area , an you start getting calls from there customer base. Fun fun

One of my commercial buildings I do a lady that works in there says she uses him.

In my area, it’s old guys who already draw Social Security, operate without licensing and just want a few bucks to pay for their meds each month.

Seems like a lot of work for a few dollars. But then again, the lady did say he wasn’t very good!

IThere are only 2 reasons why she is calling you

  1. He disappeared … Out of business

  2. She is not happy with his work

So when they say the last guy did it for
. Just have one rebuttal whatever it may be an leave it at that . Like

" I have many years of experience , and it’s taught me how to price my jobs correctly , I’m comparable price wise with most company’s that are similar to mine "

That’s it say no more .

They know dam well the old price is cheap. They just want to give it the old collage try

If not then let them go get cheap if that’s what they want. Then ask them if they eat cheap Steak

Yep. The old guy died a couple of years ago and she knew she was getting away cheap. When I first started I struggled with justifying my prices, but now (8 years later) I have no trouble justifying my prices and getting it more times than not.

This thread is why I wrote these blog posts:

http://masterproclean.com/blog/hamburgers-window-cleaning/

They automatically go out as part of my Responsibid sequence if the person is slow to respond or Declines my bid. I don’t push it bu offer it as information to make sure that whoever they choose is a quality company.

I’ll also use parts of the copy to explain my price difference when I meet the individual in person and they balk at the cost. It’s landed me several jobs where I was 60%-200% higher than the other person they hired.

Those blogs are great and easily explain what quality service really is.
Excellent use of words my friend.

That sounds like a cool guy. Does he have his cigarettes rolled up in his T-shirt sleeve?
